+Doug Shoemaker Definitely 1970s! Although a few of the action-adventure programs of the late 60s were much better than "Superfriends", which I loved anyhow.

+chewybunz I like the 1960's cartoons better than the 1970's cartoons because near the end of the 60's people complained to the networks about the violence that kids watched. The networks started making non-violent cartoons and by the end of the 70's cartoons were neutered.
@chewybunz
@chewybunz 8 жыл бұрын
+Doug Shoemaker I know precisely what you mean. In the late 1960s, many parents - presumably mothers - did raise a ruckus about violence in kids TV. This led to the cancellation of programs like "Space Ghost", "The Herculoids", "The Fantastic 4", and eventually, the removal of Jonny Quest reruns from the schedule. JQ was actually the most hated, but ironically, that show was originally developed for prime time. Superheros vanished from Saturday morning, and didn't re-appear until 1973's "Superfriends", which was corny and pro-social. However, by the end of the decade, the tide was turning. The depiction of conflict in "Superfriends" became closer to what you'd see in DC's Justice League comic series, and JQ returned to the lineup. Also, "Flash Gordon" debuted. Clearly, that show was trying to attract the huge STAR WARS audience, and featured plenty of action. I would argue that the massive success of the George Lucas film helped bring action/adventure back to Saturday mornings.

One reason of the big three networks' cancellation of Superheroic sci-fi cartoon shows in the late 60's was the mystery solving, comedy, "Scooby-Doo, Where are you?".

Oh yes! When Saturday mornings were just for the kids. Nowadays, on Saturday mornings, it's just simply news shows, lifestyle shows, and the educational children's shows that the broadcast stations have to air by order of the FCC or else they would lose their licenses.

CBS bought the Terrytunes animation studio and inventory, so MIGHTY MOUSE had been a staple on the Saturday schedule since 1955. Interestingly, HECKLE AND JECKLE aired on CBS during the 1956-57 season, and not brought back until 1965-66. Three years later, NBC would have a two-season run of the magpies.

That's why "LINUS" [10:30am] and "LASSIE" [12:30pm] repeats flip-flopped each other's time periods in early 1966. It didn't matter......"LINUS" moved to ABC the following season (in repeats), and all live-action repeats [including "LASSIE"] were jettisoned in favor of a mostly "all-superhero" line-up {including "SPACE GHOST", "FRANKENSTEIN JR. Amazing how in two years (1965-1967) the Saturday morning cartoons would morph and change into action figure heroes. I think sometimes that the war in Vietnam, believe it or not, and the anti war movement had an influence on the drastic change over of the cartoons at this time. Long live the Herculoids!

I could be wrong but I think another reason cartoons are gone from Saturday morning is because of the Children's Television Act of 1990 , meaning networks had to air a least 3 hours of educational programming , which also might ban shows like this.

I think the real reason Saturday Morning cartoons are gone was because the network affiliates weren't getting paid for any of the time they carried network programming in general. The owned and operated network stations had to carry all of the network's programming before they could air any local interest or syndicated programming. Sadly, the Saturday Morning lineup evaporated the same way game shows, soap operas and other network programming disappeared and were replaced with syndicated garbage, talk shows like Springer and Maury, as well as those ridiculous court shows. Oddly enough the networks probably make more money producing syndicated programming than they do trying to come up with a decent primetime lineup.

"LINUS THE LIONHEARTED" wasn't an "infomerical", it was a cartoon show that happened to feature icons from various Post cereals {General Foods, the makers of Post, sponsored and owned the show}, with commercials carefully separated from the stories themselves [Linus, Sugar Bear, So-Hi, Rory Raccoon, et. al. DIDN'T tell kids to buy their cereals DURING their cartoons].

Fred was already in charge of CBS' Saturday morning schedule, beginning in the fall of 1963. On the advice of several advertisers, he expanded the number of cartoons from a two hour block in September 1963, to three hours in September 1964. Finally, in September 1966, he eliminated the last of the live action repeats {"SKY KING", "LASSIE", "MY FRIEND FLICKA"}, and programmed four and a half hours of wall-to-wall cartoons from 9am(et) through 1:30pm [most of them had "superhero" themes]. "CAPTAIN KANGAROO" was the last "live" show on their Saturday schedule {8am(et)}.

In January 1966, because of the sudden popularity of ABC's "THE BEATLES" at 10:30, "LINUS" and "LASSIE" swapped time periods, to no avail. It was because of increased competition from ABC [and, to an extend, NBC] that Fred Silverman, who was in charge of programming the Saturday morning schedule, decided to jettison the live-action repeats and "older' series [like "HECKLE & JECKLE", "TENNESSEE TUXEDO" and "QUICK DRAW McGRAW"] in favor of an animated "all-superhero" lineup the following fall....

@TooleMan87 I believe some of the "Tom And Jerry" shorts shown on CBS in 1965/66 were made specifically for TV by Chuck Jones. And a few of the "Heckle and Jeckle" episodes broadcast in the 1965/66 season were made for showing in theatres from 1959 to 1961, and probably were on TV for the first time. But everything else promoted in this spot probably had aired on CBS before.

DwighttFrye This was when Saturday mornings were started to change. Both "Mighty Mouse Playhouse" and "Heckle & Jeckle Cartoon Show" ended a year later when it was replaced by "Mighty Mouse and the Mighty Heroes", and it didn't last that long until the show was canceled by fall of 1967. The rest of the Terrytoons library are sold to syndication, and on theatrical reissues by 1971 after the studio's founder Paul Terry and animator Art Bartsch has passed away, and then shutting down the entire New Rochelle studio forever, and never looked back.

When CBS Films was spun off into VIACOM in 1971, they decided it wasn't worth keeping the Terrytoons studio open, as they weren't creating new cartoons or series {they produced a few commercials, here and there, with a skeleton crew}, and closed it for good. Bill Weiss continued to work for VIACOM as the executive in charge of the Terrytoons library until his retirement.
