Happy Birthday, Dan Rather. He turned 91 years old on October 31. Jane Pauley turned 72 the same day. Two great journalists who have been a part of CBS News in different eras. Jane Pauley was mostly at NBC News until getting the "CBS News Sunday Morning" show 6 years ago after 13 years at the NBC "Today Show" (1976-1989) and "Dateline NBC" (1992-2003), among other projects there. Dan Rather was at CBS News from the early 1960s through 2006 and still is in journalism online at 91. This was the best CBS News theme ever.

Dan Rather is 90 years old and still a working journalist online. This theme, in my opinion, was the best they had used at CBS News. They used to have a specific policy of no news theme music until the 1987-1991 theme that was remastered recycling from 2011-2016 with Scott Pelley and remixed as the current version. In my opinion, if they have to remaster and remix an old theme, this is the theme to do that with. The closest to theme music they had before the original theme in the late 1980s and early 1990s was a ticker-type sound first used in 1982. Prior to that, no sound effects for CBS evening news broadcasts, yet their morning news broadcasts had many themes throughout their history.

Agree!!! I miss them. Dan was my go to for the news every evening. I was so sad when they forced him out. I also give kudos to Scott and Jeff Glor, who both took up the mantle when ratings were down and didn’t deserve to be booted.

@@yankee58100 Dan Rather would have stayed on longer had he and "60 Minutes II" producer Mary Mapes not fact-checked better the 2004 report that got them in trouble. That being said, CBS News should have given both a second chance. He was forced out at age 73, but at 90 he is still in media work online.

@@Superlad945 Yes, that is true. At least at age 91, Dan Rather is still alive and as outspoken as ever, even on other media. He is online only and charges for some of his stuff, but is still chiming in about current subject matter.

@@Superlad945 That would have been something, with the stentorian Dan Rather, formerly of the CBS News division in New York City, coming to the historic CBS Television City studios in Los Angeles, to do a report on the history of "The Price Is Right", which was actually called "The New Price Is Right" when it debuted in 1972 with a black-haired Bob Barker as host. The program had a special 25th anniversary 2-hour prime time nighttime special in August 1996. Bob Barker stayed on until 85 years old when the program was 35 years on the air. At 51 years on the air, Drew Carey has been host for 16 years and they are moving the show out of its CBS Television City studios to a new location. All the classic Norman Lear 1970s and 1980s sitcoms, such as "All In The Family" (1971-1979) and its many spin-offs, such as "Maude" (1972-1978) with a pre-"The Golden Girls" Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan, "Good Times" (1974-1979) with Jimmie J.J. Walker, who was famous for his expression "Dyno-mite!" and Janet Jackson as a child actress, "The Jeffersons" from 1975-1985, "Archie Bunker's Place" from 1979-1983, the short-lived "Checking In", which starred Marla Gibbs in a spinoff from "The Jeffersons", and the later "704 Hauser Street" (1994), with John Amos from "Good Times" playing the patriarch of a black family that had bought the old Archie Bunker house, as 704 Hauser Steet was the fictional address of the Bunker residence in the 1970s and 1980s. Later on, CBS Television City, built in 1952, was the studio of "Dancing With The Stars" beginning with its 2005 debut. The history of CBS Television City, where "The Price Is Right" and all those other shows have been filmed, its 70 years of American television history and all before live studio audiences. Dan Rather could still do a light piece on "The Price Is Right" and CBS Television City, located at 7800 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles and adjacent to Beverly Hills, for one of his Internet platforms, as at 91 years old, he has treaded into reports on hard rock bands and entertainment as well as politics and world events.

I wish CBS would bring back the CBS Evening News 1991 theme with a few newly commissioned updates as the 1991 theme would have a more up to date sound to it. And another one I wish CBS would bring back is the "Experience CBS News" 1992 closing tag. And the early 1990s "This Is CBS" ident theme. I miss the old days of TV news when the networks made an effort to care about presenting real news, and didn't go the route of being nonsensical and didn't have the inflammatory biased rhetoric like we see today. I miss seeing David Brinkley doing This Week. Plus I miss seeing Mike Wallace and Ed Bradley doing 60 Minutes. As well as miss seeing Tim Russert doing Meet The Press. And miss seeing Charles Kuralt doing Sunday Morning.

I refer to it as the best of all the "CBS Evening News" themes. It should be remastered and used currently, in my opinion. I refer to it as CBS News-The Majestic Theme, the best they ever had.

In my teens I watched the CBS evening news with Dan Rather every single night. It kept me out of trouble. I couldn't wait till end of broadcast to here this music. Even I. My teens living in Miami I knew I was destined to live in NYC. Now I'm here 10 years plus. And when shit get tough or I need inspiration or assurance I simply play this track. This and NBC nightly news long close. # I am A new Yorker # I love ❤️ New york!

This is a very good theme. Perfect for Dan Rather. However, in my opinion the 2016-2018 theme fits Cronkite! It has an urgency, action feel to that one.

Not only is this a great dramatic theme for a sadly bygone era of news reporting (my parents always alternated between this and Tom Brokaw on NBC), but the tune itself has hints of both the second Lyrick Studios logo (VHS tapes of Barney and VeggieTales) and 'Rose's Theme' from 'Titanic', which should not be too much of a coincidence as James Horner composed for both that movie and the 2006-2011 CBS Evening News theme... I actually previously thought this was the one he did, thus why I came here.

@@MJBKZbinNetwork Yes, it is too bad that they had cancelled the 15-minute long "CBS Sunday Night News" late night broadcasts that would air after the late local news. I know that it aired through the 1990s and Bill Plante was an anchor for a long time, then Russ Mitchell, who, with Monica Gayle, were the original co-anchors of "CBS News Up To The Minute", which replaced "CBS News Nightwatch", and aired from March 1992 through 2015, when it was rebranded the "CBS Overnight News". Mitchell and Gayle left the show after the first season, but Russ Mitchell continued at CBS News through the 2000s at least. The "CBS Sunday Night News" was a shortened-form update of the early evening "CBS Sunday Evening News" 30-minute broadcasts. It was kind of the CBS News counterpart to "The Weekend Report" from ABC News. NBC News, to my knowledge, had no late-night Sunday night nationally distributed news broadcasts such as these.

​@@MJBKZbinNetwork I recall the early evening "-NBC Nightly News with Garrick Utley", airing on Saturday and Sundsy evenings in the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, when John Seigenthaler, became weekend anchor of the evening newscasts. By then, Utley had gone over to ABC News. Utley, while at NBC News, had done the "Sunday Today" show with Maria Shriver, from its beginnings in 1987 to 1992, when Scott Simon and Jackie Nespral became co-anchors when "Saturday Today" had been added in August 1992 and were also by then, "Sunday Today" co-anchors as well. Garrick Utley had been the moderator of "Meet The Press" on Sundsy mornings in the 1980s through 1991. He was the last moderator when it was a 30 minute program. The program still airs.
