CBS Network - National Geographic Special - "The Violent Earth" (Complete Broadcast, 2/15/1973) 📺 🌋

Here's a complete first-run broadcast (from a ¾" Umatic tape) of the National Geographic Society Special "The Violent Earth," narrated by Leslie Nielsen (years before "Mr. Hotshot" went down the comedy route starting with "Airplane!" and "Police Squad!") and aired on the CBS Network via its then Dallas-Fort Worth, TX affiliate KDFW Channel 4. Here, volcano action of Sicily's Mount Etna (in 1971) and Africa's Mount Nyiragongo (in 1972) are spotlighted.

Show segment 2, with display and description of volcanic action, and an exploratory climb to "the belly of the beast" led by Dr. Haroun Tazieff (1914-1998), Director of France's National Center for Scientific Research, with French and Swiss scientist-mountaineers (a.k.a. "Tazieff's Gang"), and an example of them at work and play is shown, plus him explaining his technique and methods (which he compares to sports); then, to the April 5th 1971 eruption of Etna and Tazieff's team in action

Show segment 3, and more of Etna (which lays waste to all in its path over a 69-day stretch) and the damage to the vineyards and surrounding areas, especially the town of Fornazzo; scenes of Tazieff lecturing are shown, followed by American students at JFK Airport in summer 1972 out to join him at central Africa's rainforest, and especially Nyiragongo; they are met by Robert Citron of Educational Expeditions International; scenes of nature are interspersed with their reaching their destination; a look at the village of Kibati before Tazieff leads the expedition

Segment 4, and Tazieff's team inches closer to belly of Nyiragongo beast, where they see the active molten lava as up close as can be, but minor eruptions complicate the climb before Tazieff gives the team their marching orders as they go down and see for themselves the caldera as they get to the scientific camp and do their work - and a few Americans prove their mettle in the process by helping take samples of the gases, earning Tazieff's respect

Segment 5, with more of Tazieff's Nyiragongo expedition, with him trying to reach the lava lake for the first time since 1959; but it had changed due to numerous eruptions since then, and an attempt to measure the crater commences (and Tazieff at this point is joined by his wife France, where they see the lake together); after 14 days, he decides to go into the fire pit, but is weakened by the fumes and has to be pulled back up

This program was rerun on HBO in 1983, & later as part of a syndicated group of episodes as "The Best of National Geographic." WTTW aired "The Best of National Geographic" in Chicago, while WOR aired the series in New York City.

This was the 30th NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SPECIAL for CBS. The series of specials debuted on September 10, 1965. One more would air on April 12, 1973, titled " The Haunted West" before moving to ABC that Fall.

1973 was a great year for me in Detroit, Hot Wheels,Lionel,Matchbox Fasttracks, Marx Cape Canaveral Play Sets, Coloring Books ,Superman ,GI Joe Lunch Box,79 cents Fries,Shake and Cheese Burger at Burger Chief,Keds High Top Tennis Shoes,Schwinn Sting Ray riding with my friends to the Park,Playing Baseball, car prizes in Post Alphabet Cereal, Honeycomb hideout, Funny Faces,Goofy Grape, Mr Softy Ice Cream Truck, love the Mercuries and the Commercials. Alot of great things to watch on television back than, no doom and gloom or weird crazy things on television and on the news, Saturday Morning Cartoons,Captain Kangaroo, Sir Grave Ghastly,Creature Feature,Outer Limits,Twilight Zone,Star Trek,Captain James T Kirk William Shatner, 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

The last season the National Geographic Specials aired on CBS. They moved to ABC in the fall of 1973 for a couple of years, then to PBS.
