Last year, Steve Carter, of Philadelphia, found a picture of himself on a missing children's website. CBS News correspondent Terrell Brown reports on Carter's journey to find out who he really is.

This hits hard. My mother basically kidnapped me as well, telling my father I was a miscarriage and skipping town. He never even knew I existed until a few years ago.

Damn...that is just crazy. As a father of 2, this would be devastating and amazing to me all at once. Devastating knowing I missed so much time and being angry at myself for letting it happen, and amazing and happy being reunited with a child I never knew I had. I hope you and your father have a great relationship moving forward!

Imagine adopting a child and then finding out they shouldn’t have even been up for adoption. At least now he has nice adoptive parents and is reunited with his nice biological father. I hope they meet soon or have already met since this video is old.

My first thought was "oh, were his adopted parents kidnappers?!" They weren't, nor were they really mentioned again. I know this guy has a lot to sort out, but I hope they don't forget who he became being raised by those who adopted him and they get the appreciation they deserve.

of course anyone should be appreciative but no one is owed anything but the same dignity and respect they show you. Because someone adopts you doesn’t mean you owe them anything, should someone be grateful? Sure. But because they adopted you doesn’t mean you should have to spend your life bound by the adoption.

It was the father than arranged the missing persons listing. Therefore the artist could have simply created a younger version of the father. And he does look extremely similar to his dad.

It seems like she made sure he didn’t get back to the father. She changed the “race of the father”, which made it so they’d never link him to the father. I’m afraid that she probably had severe post partum, or the father had issues. (Which, he could have changed after losing his son for 30 years.)

@@Rhythmicons just bringing up a common issue that’s a possibility. Just a theory. Postpartum depression is much more common than people admit, so I think it’s worth mentioning. Same with domestic abuse. It was/is so common, that we should consider it also a possibility. Or she could have thought that she was being controlled by the government and was going to be abducted by aliens. Or she could’ve been a Russian spy. anything is possible. But an educated guess would be post-partum and/or domestic abuse. 🤷‍♀️ Something to look out for even today.

@@incogb6696 but it’s still better to know he was in good hands his whole life, and that they were just innocent people who adopted a child, not people who abducted him and pretended to be his parents the whole time. it’d be a lot harder to learn your adoptive parents were actually child abductors.

That's a great story, I have a good story myself. At 5 yrs. Old myself and 2 brothers were abandoned by our mother.our father never looked for us.someone locked our father,one by one he came to pick us up.we all were sent to an orphanage. Shot story..,at 45 yrs old.i met my mother,I had prayed all those years to find her.it was a horrible experience for me.some people just don't want kids.i feel for all that have had a life as this.im73yrs. Old now with a wonderful husband and3 daughter.love your family,hold tight to your children.may God bless you sll.

I’ve seen his picture many times on missing children’s posters in various places like Walmart, etc and different sites. Strange how some pictures stand out more than others. Nice to know this case was solved and has a happy ending. I’ve often wondered what happened to children who’ve gone missing for many years/decades ...

I think I can understand how his felt as I recently found out that I have a son I didn't know about for 41 years. He was born in another country after the last time I was stationed overseas. Two of the happiest days of my life have been this year. The first was opening an email I normally would have deleted and the other was receiving confirmation from our DNA tests.

It is never any woman’s intention to have a child and then just run away for no reason at all. There was a reason whether you would like to admit that or not.

@@T-bm1nq As a woman, no. She's crazy. If she weren't, she would've given the child to a trusted family member or friend, but instead, she changed her sons name and then abandoned him. She clearly didn't want the dad to ever find him and wanted the dad to suffer. She's a horrible person and shouldn't be defended.

Honestly this kind of thing has happened many times over the years, it was even more common back in the 50s-70s when you could travel quickly, but couldn’t be tracked that well.
