An advanced enough ai could figure this out *better* than a human, and we are not that far from making something that advanced. Edit: I've caused confusion with the phrase "not that far", I mean on the scale of all human history, so not in 5 years, but very roughly in a century or so. It is sensible to be unimpressed with *current* AI, it is unsensible to claim there is something magical about our flesh computers that will literally *never* be beaten by silicon computers.

This hits me somewhere in the feels. The Dispatcher leads with more Empathy than I've ever witnessed outside of a Therapist office. Listening to the Dispatcher calmly explain "This isn't where you order pizza..." instead of hanging up, getting mad, or accusative. His ability to even be open in a circumstance where he could be pranked. The training to Listen and keep the caller on the line is what allowed him to make the realization that this was serious and real.

Dispatchers are trained to LISTEN and trust their gut feeling. They are also trained to ask yes/no questions in case someone is in the room with the 911 caller. Calls like this are also played during training. All 911 calls are treated as REAL emergencies until proven otherwise. I much prefer how we do things in the UK. Our 999 emergency services operators are much better trained, the control rooms are better equipped and professional. They are very polite and efficient, we wouldn’t be without them. You dial 999, BT handle your call and dispatch you to the emergency service required. Then you speak to that service’s control centre for your area. You should all listen to the heroic 999 calls made over here, on KZbin. Some shining examples of bravery and fantastic communication; such as the children who have called and the deaf man who tapped to respond to the operator.

He was drugged up, being abusive, and threatening to shoot his roommate, so I knew I had to come up with a clever excuse to gtfo of there. I emailed my landlord and asked her to call me and tell me my apartment was flooded (while I had her on speakerphone). She did so, saved me from that sh*thole and I’ve never gone back.

I don't understand the code everybody here is talking about. What does a large pizza have to do with domestic abuse. A piece of pizza might refer to a slice or a cut. I'm guessing pepperoni referred to punching. Other than that... Large pizza? Aside from blood, I can't think of anything else that would suggest. Does cheese refer to scabs? To skin? Does the crust refer to swelling because it is puffy? I don't get it. As for the pepperoni... All I can think of is assault or that it's supposed to suggest that it's been going on for a while since, I believe, pepperoni is aged. I'm not fully understanding the code. The only parts I understand are blood & swelling (maybe pizza) and assault (I think pepperoni). Does pizza mean bruise? I don't get it.
@rinkukitakato28335 жыл бұрын
I love how she just forged on with her words. To me, the clues were the "um yeah (then continue with address)" at the beginning and "nonono, you're not understanding". The dispatch asked again if she called 911 for pizza, and she said yes with a specific address. In my place, people generally said their specific order _first_ and recipient's name and address last. Her saying it was like "here, in case shit hits the fan and I can't continue, so you can find me". Her "nonono" was her telling the dispatch that it's not what it looks like, i.e. it wasn't an actual pizza call. The following replies started with yes or no questions and she answered with just those. The added words after are likely to throw off suspicions, and make it sound like a legit pizza call. I still don't know how she conveyed it was domestic violence... Or the cops found out when they were at the scene. They didn't include the full call, she could have relayed those then. Or it could be because pizza is a bread-y is make and requires you to beat/knead the dough and spread it or something that indicated domestic violence too.. Or it was used because it was the one food item that would take a bit of conversation to order?

This is scary because growing up it was drilled into every woman's head I know and mine included that if you're in a dv situation and cannot safely call 911 you need to call and pretend like you're ordering a pizza. Like I even took a self-defense class where this was brought up. So the fact that it's so unknown to the actual people on the receiving end of this is a little bit horrifying. I wonder how many people's lives were negatively impacted or ended because of this miscommunication between groups. 😢

Stout Lager I worked as a 911 dispatcher 20 years ago and it was part of the training then. There was a recording we listened to where a woman called in and said she was going to be late for work. The dispatcher caught on but by the time officers had arrived, her estranged husband had killed her, her parents, and 2 children. He then shot one officer and put the gun to his own head.

Creative Common Yes it happened about 30 years ago (the actual crime). And strangely enough when I told my wife about it she had known the family for several years when she was younger. She said she stopped going to their house because the father was giving her a very weird vibe. And to be clear on the training, I had to study calls and what to do for 6 months before even being allowed to talk to anyone, and another six months of personally supervised call taking before being put in my own. The amount of people that call with stupid questions can burn you out fast though, when you can see 30+ people waiting to get through on 911 and people are asking things like what is the number to the trash department? After you just got done telling an 11 year old that the police are coming and trying to keep her calm as she hides in the closet while her mom is being raped 5 feet away. I believe 8 of my old coworkers killed themselves. I got out when I started realizing what that job was doing to me.
