David Dyer I’d say polished, rather than learned. There had to be a basis for her accent, which there probably was seen as she came fron New England. You wouldn’t have got anyone from, say, Texas talking like that, learned or otherwise.

Her forceful honesty is remarkable! Poor Morley is trying to say how laudable old age is and she rightly points out how the elderly are dumped into homes. She is one person who had the blessings of a strong family and wealth, able to avoid that anonymous death faced by many.

Eh, in my both views are right to some degree, and yet both are too extreme in either direction: some sort of humbly withdrawn "passing of the torch" but yet still worthwhile/deserved involvement approach of [and appreciation for] the elderly is ideal - not only for just them, but for everyone of all ages in society. 👌🏼

In my culture it would be shameful to put your elders in nursing homes I am quite young and would never in a million years think about putting my parents in some facility if I can prevent it however I hate being a bother to anyone in my old age but maybe my mind might change as I grow up.

She looks amazing, I believe she aged quite well and her outgoing athletic look about life is refreshing for an actress. She was a tough one and I doubt anyone could compare to her today. I love that she didn't really go along with the "Glamour Girl" look during the studio system era and that she did her own thing. She's a great ideal for an independent woman.

I don't think any actor/actress today could be as honest, direct, and frank as Katherine is here. And although this fear of being honest could be because of the increasing lack of privacy experienced by said actors/actresses, or the much faster rate at which statements they make are spread and criticized today, I'd love to watch an interview with an actress in which she has the courage to speak her mind and say something like "Aging is horrible, just kills us when it's time".

I think it says something that her female peers, that is to say, other actresses, women like Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Vivien Leigh, judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Holliday, Tallulah Bankhead are all on record as absolutely adoring her. Find me another actress who was so universally admired by her peers as this one was. That says something about her character right there.

People need to stop saying that she and others spoke with a trained “trans Atlantic” dialect. It’s untrue. She speaks in the dialect of a upper middle class New Englander. If you actually listen to her carefully, you can tell it’s distinct from standard RP.

My perspective is when Kate says,"life is miserable for a great many people", she's referring to the elderly put away in care homes to rot away, However, she's saying this should not be the way. I think when Kate says very bluntly, "kill them, it's an unnatural way to live" she is basically saying that if people are in pain and no longer find pleasure in life, they should be able to choose whether or not to end it. This is just the way I interpret it, and I agree with Katharine.

There's a video on youtube where the interviewer talks about this interview. In the video he says he did not like his interview with Katharine Hepburn because he was intimidated by her. I'm glad he did it though, there are not many interviews of her's :)

Hepburn was exaclty right about what we in the US did and still do to our elderly by thowing them into a nursing home. My sister did this to my Mother and I could not bare to have her there alone. So for 475 days I was with my Mom (except sleeping) every single day until she died. Very pitiful to see all the lonely dying souls. I only wonder what fate awaits me. Oh well I don't have any children,,,,,but maybe a neighbor will throw me into one should I live that long.

Katharine Hepburn was a great actress, and a true Movie Star. Hepburn was a great friend to Susan Hayward and the night Susan presented the Oscar with Charlton Hestonr for Glenda Jackson Hepburn was on the phone that afternoon begging Susan not to cancel and was in Susan's dressing room that night at the Award Ceremony. I think this reflects on Kate's long standing friendships to the great stars of Hollywood.

galept Yes, Katharine Hepburn disliked Meryl Streep. She did like Julia Roberts and thought Melanie Griffith was good but lacked staying-power. In my mind Meryl is the top contender for a contemporary Katharine-Hepburn-ish actress in terms of talent and career, but I think there are some key differences in their personalities. That said, there are several younger actresses right now that I think have great potential.
