My dad worked with her at the London Palladium in the 50s/60s. He didn’t want to do it because she had such an unreliable reputation. But we were short of money so he did it. And he said she was one of the most professional people he ever worked with. She was patient if someone made a mistake and never threw tantrums or was rude. He did say she didn’t look well. He said she looked tired. I don’t think it was too long before she died but i’m not sure as i was quite a young child.

Is that really true? We all make choices. I love Judy too, but I don't think turning her into a victim helps anyone. She was triumphant in so many ways and not a victim. I don't see her as a victim. We know she struggled but who doesn't? Are we all victims them, or do we all have choices and agency over our lives? Everything is perceptual. You can look at peoples' lives any way you choose - and if you see victimhood then it's a reflection usually of what's going on for you inside of you. Not for them. And certainly not for Judy. One thing I do think is funny in hindsight is that she's speaking here about Liza's impending marriage to Peter Allen - who was gay. Just as Judy's husband Vincent Minnelli was. Yet it doesn't seem to phase Judy. She seemed to love Peter, regardless. That is astonishing in an age when most mothers were homophobic and it goes to show you how far ahead of her time Judy was. She was a modern mother in so many ways and I think that's what people struggle with. She was open about her problems and accepted her children how they were, without trying to change them. How many mothers back then would've accepted the likes of Peter Allen as their son-in-law, knowing full well (being in showbusiness and a gay icon) that he was as gay as a Mexican tablecloth!!!???

I mean, I don't know about wonderful - her daughter Liza was clearly heavily parentified, as she had to take care of their house and also feel responsible for her monther's wellbeing. You can see, how anxious and hesitant she acts when Judy tells her to vouch for her not being difficult. Yet, I do think she loved her children and wanted what's best for them - she did have a mountain of mental health issues thanks to her upbringing but I think we can say it about her children too. It wouldn't be fair to their struggles to idealize her as a mother figure and negate that anything was wrong, as she is doing in this interview.

To clarify what is being stated by the respondent to the video and respondent to that comment, this video does not include Liza Minelli, but Judy’s other daughter (who also has a terrific singing voice that was never touted enough), Lorna Luft. Lorna and Joey Luft seem very supportive and loving to their mother here (as she does to them). I believe that she cared deeply for her children. but was hobbled by financial pressures put upon her by an allegedly thieving husband (Sid Luft), who allegedly took essentially all her money, along with some creep promoters, and left her destitute when she should have had millions socked away and been able to live comfortably with her children. Because of the thefts, however, acknowledge the fact that she was constantly on the road as a result and worked virtually to death to keep a roof over their head and food in their tummies. No one wants to discuss that sad fact. Love you, Judy. You should have had a dream life; I hope that you’re having it in heaven. 🎶❤️🎶

Kerry Teodori she was as good a mother as she could be - just as you probably are - or your mother was - or wasn't - and she clearly adored those children and they adored her. To this day, Liza defends her mother and yet someone with a "bad mother" wouldn't be doing that. No one is perfect all the time. Nor should we expect them to be. She was completely broke, & didn't have a stable home for herself & her kids. Yet, millions of people have been entertained & touched by her work, for decades. She should've been cared for, in return for the gifts she spent her entire life givng to so many generations. Alcoholism & addiction wasn't as easy to get help for, back then. There were very few resources for those who were suffering. It was even more difficult for women, & especially a famous woman. Her death was a tragic ending. I hope she's found peace.

Why is it that no one can say exactly why Judy was broke. Any star who worked as hard and steady in the movies, television, radio and the concert stage as Judy did should have accumulated a nice fortune. All the stars of today show off their wealth because they don't allow anyone to steal from them. I am sure Madonna is very savvy about her money and is worth a lot of money. Candice, Judy was not an alcoholic and I wish people could realize that. People’s interviews have told us that. Those who knew her well. On Autopsy, it was reported that there was no sign of alcoholism found, that the amount of pills were no more than usual, and evidence showed that the real cause of death was malnutrition. The media found a gold mine in Judy to spread this propaganda. It made millions. Watch her movies. Watch later movies like SUMMER STOCK and STAR IS BORN. No one can sing and dance as much as she does with such accuracy as Judy did or have the clear eyes she had and be wacked out on drugs. If she took a little nap in her dressing room, the media snapped a picture and said JUDY GARLAND PASSES OUT IN HER DRESSING ROOM. It's great getting to see Judy again as I remember seeing her when I was about 9...she still looks great here, compared to her appearance just 2 years later at her own wedding when she looked like she had aged 10 years or more since this great interview. It's good to see her happy. I know she still had stress and big problems, but she managed to come across as being happy. I think she genuinely was when she was around her children...she looks like she could eat that little boy of hers up! Joey and Lorna are both great and beautiful kids and they were the apples of her eye, no doubt. As a very small woman myself (4'10"), it irked me when Barbara Walters asked Judy to stand up, so everyone could see how tiny she was. Sure, she's petite, but she was an incredibly powerful singer and performer. Do you have to keep harping on her height and comparing her to a little girl? It's rude. I'm so glad she was aware of how "tragic" everyone saw her story as but could still make fun of it and have joy in her life. Love me some Judy. (Her daughter had some pipes) She did seem altered in interviews but she came from a culture where most living rooms had buckets of booze on tap and piles of cigarettes to graze on all day. You could call her an addict but I see her as dependent not addicted. She was a great mom. The love from her kids is beaming. I know a lot of sober parents who never pull that off.

I think Judy was very wary of interviews because she had been burned by the press so many times, she put on a bit of an act with big doe eyes and a soft little voice - perhaps hoping if they felt sorry for her they'd be kinder to her. I don't blame her! It must be very wearing to walk into an interview where everyone has already made up their minds about who you are and what you are like, and having to choose your words so carefully when you answer because you know some arsehole somewhere will twist your words into something else to fit their own agenda. I think the nerves and stress coupled with how mindful she had to be of her answers probably made her stammer a lot more than she would have done normally and didn't help the image people had in their minds that she was on something. You can hear her on rehearsal recordings with her friends and she sounds like a different person: Absolutely coherent, strong voiced, intelligent, incredibly funny, energetic, curious, incredibly kind. That's the Judy I believe is real. Tragic things happened to her, but I don’t believe she was tragic at all.

I can honestly say from what we the fans have read and witnessed she was a person who was used and her husband went through all her money and I wished instead of him being given custody of there two children here that the judge looked him and his lawyer right in the face and ordered that he pay back Judy every red cent he gambled away without her knowledge I may add being that is when her life spiraled out of control she o.d. and who wouldn't of her husband took everything and it truly was a heart breaker that once she loss her babies she remarried and died! I’ve read where she was a great mother (overall, considering the addictions). Her kids here clearly love and adore her. EDIT to add: It’s a real testament to her - and to other women - who had terrible mothers to not repeat with their own children how they were treated. It shows their innate goodness and how they have such love to give even though they weren’t shown any themselves.

Watching in 2025. Judy was always my hero. I was born in 2000 fyi, 30 years after her death. I wish I could’ve watched her grow old. She’s one of the greats, maybe THE greatest.

Barbara Walters has always taken pride in making people uncomfortable in interviews. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing from a journalistic perspective. She's doing her job.

Poor Judy. She was clearly very ill. She had cirrhosis which causes mental fog and weight loss. My mother died from cirrhosis and she looked a lot like Judy. Thin, tiny and very sick. When Judy stood up it was heart breaking. She really loved her children. You could tell that.

Around the 0:58 mark is kind of awkward/funny (in hindsight) because the husband they are talking about is Peter Allen. Liza later said "I married Peter, and he didn't tell me he was gay. Everyone knew but me. And I found out ... well, let me put it this way: I'll never surprise anybody coming home as long as I live. I call first!" Although the fact that Allen was Judy's protégé (that's how they met) should have tipped Liza off lol.

Jaycub, I subscribed to your channel based on this lovely and loving interview. Thank you for spreading the joy that is Judy. To me, she was not a tragic figure IN SPITE of all the negative influences taking advantage of her. Judy was an excellent Mom, a woman with a wicked sense of humor, a great story teller, and a genius talent. And here in this interview we see a true Judy in love with her sweet children. Love it ❤
