People, who understand Cannon Law and Civil Law, will immediately know that Bishop Strickland had two remedies. He decided not to follow either. WHY? Because, he would be required to expose the specific reasons for removal. This means that what he did to be fired -- was bad or embarrassing. People such as Bishop Strickland remind me of as a teacher who constantly criticizes and belittles the principal. The principal finally says enough and fires the teacher. The Pope is the head of the church universal, not Bishop Strickland. I find Bishop Strickland hypocritical. He constantly criticized the gay community. Does the Tyler diocese have a group called Courage.? It is a prayer and support group for people who have same sex attraction. It is easy to lead and complain. Removing Bishop Strickland was an act prompted by The Lord through Pope Francis. Being too Catholic can be a manmade problem. An academic approach to living the life of Christ Jesus does not promote faith, hope, charity, and love. Pope Francis urges priests be “shepherds with the ‘smell of the sheep’”, grounded in the situation of their flock. A priesthood isolated from the people of God, is neither a Catholic priesthood nor a Christian one.

See St. Robert Bellarmine, a holy and wise Jesuit for what he said about errant popes. St. Thomas Aquinas would also acknowledge the standing of a bishop to reproach a pope that has lost his way. This is in accord with Church precedent (e.g., Pople Honorius I). Also, check out the Book of Acts per St. Paul confronting St. Peter at the Council of Jerusalem. Pope Francis ignored the Code of Canon Law and did not afford Bishop Strickland due process, which a pope can do but nevertheless constitutes an abuse of power.

Our relationship with the Pope is akin to that of a married couple; we can disagree behind closed doors, but to openly disparage one another is disrespectful to both parties involved. Pope Francis was criticized for his failures, not disparaged by Bishop Strickland. There is a difference. According to the Catholic Code of Canon Law, Bishop Strickland was within his rights to offer filial correction to Pope Francis. According to the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas he may have even had a moral obligation to do so. Pope Francis has been a bad pope, disparaging the portions of the flock he doesn't understand and--despite his fine rhetoric about dialog and accompaniment--does not even try to understand. The great majority of young priests and seminarians regard Pope Francis a hypocrite who does not walk the talk.
