Denver police to crack down on missing and expired tags for a month

The campaign is expected to run through Aug. 15 and while DPD says it's not a policy change, it said in May that it would no longer stop drivers for low-level traffic offenses unless they represented a threat to safety.

Not enforcing legal registrations is a slap in the face of those of us who do keep our vehicles legal. You would think it's a no brainer for law enforcement to make sure all vehicles on the roads to be in compliance because it keeps criminals from using vehicles in crimes and easier for law enforcement to track down vehicles used in crimes, like hit and runs which are happening more and more all the time.

@@guesswhomartin9249 traffic stops are for civil traffic violations which come with traffic tickets if you don't pay the traffic ticket in court the state can suspend your divers license once your drivers license is suspended you can't drive or you go to jail for driving on a suspended license. So no traffic stops don't violate the US constitution only sovereign citizens like you think otherwise if you don't want to be stopped for a traffic stop then stop breaking traffic laws simple.

That is an awesome idea. You'd have 30 days to get the vehicle registered, pay towing and impound fees, AND must show a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Otherwise, the vehicle is sold at auction!

That’s ridiculous, first they refuse to enforce the law and now they choose to enforce it only for a month. They should be enforcing it all year. The whole argument about the city not making any revenue on enforcement is BS; just impound vehicles that aren’t registered and sell that at auction if the fine isn’t collected within 30-days. Yeah, I just got hit by an out of state immigrant to CO with plates from Florida that were NINE months expired. That means they went nearly a YEAR without registering their vehicle in CO. Why should I keep paying then? The DMV caps the fines past a certain point, and since the state charges so much for registration anyhow, it doesn't matter if you don't follow the law.

Look. I get it. But as someone that drove around WITH NO PLATES for 10 months, please have a heart. I had zero other options. If you saw me on the road, it was for a reason and not a joy ride. It was stressful. It was scary. But folks, times are very very hard for those of us at the bottom of the economic ladder. I struggled. I have plates now. And even though I'm still bankrupt and homeless, I have liability insurance... it is 703 A MONTH! I'm working 2 jobs and I'm homeless, disabled, and sleep in 2001 car with 250k and broken power steering. My point is this... PLEASE JUST MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. Do not assume all of us are drugged up loser criminals. Some of us are doing everything we can to survive and have to break some laws to keep up. That is called CAPITALISM. Well, here's an idea, If you're not going to enforce a law, don't pass the law. If you pass a law, enforce the law. I mean what a chaotic Schiff show, "I wrote the "POLICY" with every intention of suspending the "POLICY," from time to time." Spoken like a true bureaucrat. WTAF You can over-ride a LAW with a memorandum? You pick and choose what LAWS to enforce and when, when you FEEL like it, now? Oh, it's May 1st, I don't FEEL like enforcing vehicle registration, this month. My "POLICY", over-riding the Colorado Revised Statutes, is now in effect. Well, it's July. I guess I FEEL like cracking down on vehicle registrations, now, so I'm suspending my "POLICY" and we'll start enforcing the C.R.S. again..., but only for 30 days, at which time I'll reimplement my "POLICY." How about if citizens pick and choose which taxes to pay and how much! That seems fair and equitable. How about doing the damn job you are PAID to do and enforce ALL the laws. make all traffic offenses a minimum of a 10,000 fine, speed more than 5 over the limit, 10K, run a light, $15,000, Road rage, $20,000 and 1 year jail. Split lanes or HOV violations, $50K and no License till you pay it off. Revenue is no longer a problem and roads are SAFE. If you drive with expired tags more than 2 months old or no tags at all, the car becomes the property of the county it was possessed in, then sold at auction or the value of the car must be paid for plus fines and possibly jail.
