I've come across anything from chairs to mattresses in the middle of the freeway. Once a set of cables destroyed the front of my car. People just don't give a damn about securing stuff in their vehicles. The police should catch these people with cameras to set an example.

Never swerve to avoid an obstacle, slam on the brakes, if it's an animal tall enough to go over your hood, hit the gas, do not brake unless you want it to go through the windshield and impale you. Never swerve to avoid an animal, most the times they make it past the car, and if you avoid it, you might die while the thing runs off. I've called in probably 3 ladders in my lifetime, a fridge and few other objects, call CHP and report object and people with loose object on their trucks.

That's horrible news to hear. My family loves the fire depts across orange county, the best people you'll ever meet. We will be praying for them. I get so irritated when I see so many trucks carrying things unsecured, I see it all the time with landscapers/maintenance men in Santa Ana, everyday there's another truck with tons of stuff unsecured.

They probably fell out of a truck that was transporting someone's furniture when they were moving. It happened to me when my father used his truck to help me move many years ago. My father was driving in front of me with many of my possessions in the back of his truck, including a living room chair. The chair fell out of the truck and landed on the road. My father didn't notice and keep going, even though I blared my horn. I must have been too far behind him for him to hear the horn.

Wonder if every automobile had a video camera or dash cam which would detect objects/humans/animals in the road that would then alert all drivers within a few miles to slow down - bet there’s a way to prevent this with AI. At same time, make it illegal for people to leave their junk on the roads that could injure others. We need public service announcements on how to manage driving under such conditions especially at night ie.swerve or suddenly break? Of course we all need to practice defensive driving ie. 3 second rule (up to 6 seconds for large vehicles). Wonder if these firefighters were working on the Airport fire - if so, take action against OC public works for having started that fire during an insufferable dreadful heat wave
