Newly crowed Miss Universe Japan Ariana Miyamoto is sparking controversy as the first biracial winner of the pageant. Japan is one of the most homogeneous countries on earth, and the newest beauty queen is prompting a debate about what it means to be Japanese. As Seth Doane reports, the 20-year-old says she wants to represent the new face of Japan.

@@bbee8829 You need to learn to show some tough love for once. You are helping destroy what makes humanity beautiful which are different homogeneous ethnic groups that created their own country, language, culture, and history. These are things you literally all benefit from. Without having the native ethnic group, you will eventually lose the language, and when you lose the language, you lose the culture, and when you lose the culture, you lose the history. Just look at Native Americans and aboriginals. But nah, they were racist for trying to continue to exist.

Silvia Rotela I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. We usually learn enough Spanish in school to get a passing grade and maintain our GPA. It comes in handy for the spring break trip to Cancun, Mexico at least. I can remember enough high school Spanish to converse with my landscaper to make sure he doesn't screw up my yard. Other than that we Americans don't need to converse in Spanish. We just learn enough to make sure the work we want done, is done sufficiently. To be fair though, I don't go out of my way to learn the languages of other minority immigrants who work in service related industries either.

Dang she's gorgeous... I'm a woman but when I saw her it took me a couple of minutes to remember that I don't swing that way... And that I'm married. Anyway, first a black president in America and now a black miss Japan... I guess it's safe to say that hell has frozen over. The end of times is clearly near. Any day now they're going to find Jimmy Hoffa's grave, I'm telling you. But seriously, I see lots of hot Japanese chicks on TV. Did they all call sick on that day? I hate having to say that but Ms. Miyamoto didn't have real competition for that beauty contest. The other contestants were average at best , clumsy, fidgety and awkward. I mean, if trying to represent your country, shouldn't you try to exhibit a certain amount of poise and dignity? The way some of these girls were handling themselves, you would have thought they were at some frathouse party, entertaining aspiring gentlemen.

True, she is very attractive. But the pageant winner is not determined only on physical beauty. There are personality factors that are also take into serious consideration. If a competitor is pretty but messes up in the other areas, such as lacking poise, ability to converse intelligently, then she has no chance of winning.

This sounds similer to Crystal Kay. Probably one of the most talented artists of mixed orgion in Japan. Yet gets continually stereotyped because she's a halu. Tasha which is Korean half black as well. Is also extremely gifted and among Korea's best R&B Soul rap artists. Ai is also a halfu and another extremely talented artist. Yet when we come to someone like Namie Amuro. Which is half Italian half Japanese. It's a completely different story. She is one of the biggest pop artists in all of Japan. Why not the backlash there? Not taking anything away from Namie though. As is one of my favirite J-Pop artists of all time. The point being is there seems to be double standards at work here. Now to be fair Japan never had a civil rights movement. So when i bring it up most Japanese i've talked never understood the context. However when i compared it to their own. As in the case of Okinawan's not being treated as real Japanese. They understood the reference and felt ashamed afterwords. It's not right how Okinawan's are treated as they are Japanese two. What about 5 and 6th generation Korean Japanese? They have known no other language. They speak Japanese, think Japanese and in all rights are Japanese. Because my family came to America from Germany. Some 300+ years ago. Does that make me any less american? Japan has it's good points but they just like all of us have their bad. We all can stand a few lessons in how to be better human beings. To treat each other with respect & dignity. Before using race as a means of justifying our own culturial superiority, just saying.

I'm upset yet not really surprised at the hate she gets. A lot of people are jealous of us halfies because we're exotic and most are good looking, just like any other race. A lot if it is also being a more homogeneous country and unused to diversity as she has stated.
@blue3374
@blue3374 7 жыл бұрын
dw Zhang I don't think you're getting my point at all. I wasn't in any way trying to say that halfies are better than any other single race, I was merely trying to address the people who say that mixed racial people are inferior, to say that we are in fact on the same level as any other person who is only mono raced hence the "just like any other race" I said previously (if you read my comment at all.) If you can't acknowledge that halfies are in fact beautiful just like any other mono raced people and also have issues (just like any mono raced person even if it's not necessarily the same issues being faced) then that's your problem not mine. Also if you're trying to be racist or at the very least, rude to the idea of biracial people, I don't see any point in trying to explain this simple and true fact to a close minded bigot like you. Thanks :)

The comments... as usual baffle me.Because it's a black male with a Asian women, if it was a white male who did the same thing it wouldn't be as negative in the comments about why her father isn't around. Black men do the same shit in America with their own race ... but since this is with a non black women people want to generalize and this becomes the topic of discussion instead of what else might have happened between her parents. White men do this on the regular in Southeast Asian countries with men/female asians but i guess since this has become public its a big deal. People don't ever think that maybe the father wanted a divorce based off of race issues in Japan? Maybe the mother wanted a divorce because something he did or well hmm MAYBE the racism in Japan?? Maybe he just bounced out who knows? And also who cares?? The father didn't win the pageant Ariana did. Think out of the box people, so many assumptions. I'm not backing up black men who do this on purpose one bit... but jesus christ broaden your thoughts on this subject other than thinking the father in this situation was trash. I love all races, white, green, yellow, purple, gold, pink just wish people weren't as dense as they are.

Even if its the same color of race you are mixed unless you have a legit lineage to ONE race you ARE mixed. Btw, did you ever take a world history class? I'm all for mixed race, I dont discriminate if people want to mix or if they don't want to, but I will discriminate people who just don't plain like others (mixed or not) based off ignorance. People are mixing regardless soooo dont discriminate, your ignorance is showing. And btw in MANY many years away, everyone will be mixed, but you we will be dead by then hopefully most of this idiot talk about race bashing will be dead by then too!

Thank you Miss Japan for shedding light on those of us who are half Japanese. My white father married a wonderful Japanese woman and had three sons. When I lived in Japan the Japanese kids constantly teased us. I wasn't Japanese enough. When we live in the US I was made fun of by the non asian communities. Only when my dad was stationed in Hawaii did I feel like I fit in because off base it seemed like everyone was mixed race. Today I live in Tennessee and for years I was constantly asked where I was from.

And in turn, you make some of the other hafus (like myself) feel proud and a bit more comfortable in our shells and skin so thank you very much for that. Stay safe, healthy, & happy.

I'm just so proud of her, and I don't know her. first time I saw her on tv yrs ago, I thought "really? she's japanese?" now I watched her say she doesn't know anything but Japanese culture, she's Japanese. Pls accept her. It's been 2 yrs, so I wish she feele "belong" now and any other hafu.

We humans love to over complicate our lives with labels, and invisible lines to quantify the information we receive. Sort of like the first computers had to do, before big data crunching smart phones ever came into being. Does that mean we are actually slow as a species? DO WE REALLY HAVE THAT FAR to go, in terms of evolution? Are we really that slow as a species? I love to come across random stories like this from around the globe, because it really blurs the lines of the concept of race and gives one an immersive sense of UNIVERSAL pride as appose to just national pride and HOPE.

This an eyes opening report. I always thought that Japanese are more tolerant toward other races. Well, this report prove my wrong. As the report stated that Japan had been isolated of the rest of the world until 19 century is one reason for this less tolerant. I may add another reason for that is Japanese language being very unique and difficult to learn has limited the communication between Japanese culture and the other cultures.

The correct spelling of this word, meaning 'of the same kind, nature or character', is homogeneous. The variant spelling homogenous is labelled erroneous by the OED, although it does cite numerous instances dating back to 1956.

I'm happy for her, to win as miss Japan.well, some Philippine candidates for beauty pageants competing around the world are biracial too.but I'm not agree with it, but anyway it's fine, as long as they are at least 85% Filipina to be representing for miss universe and or what ever beauty title they are participating in, and also I wanted that their last names must be filipino name not foreigner names.

I almost tear up when listening to her story. I really hope she wins this year's Miss Universe, I think she deserves it because unlike the rest of the cookie-cutter contestants, she has a story to tell. Unfortunately, I think the title will most likely go to a latina in order to appease the Trump controversy (I am latina myself and have nothing against a latina winning but I think Ariana deserves it more than anyone this year).

I am half and grew up in Japan. Bullied as well. My brothers got it worst when boys would put his face in the toilet everyday at school. he could not go use the school bathroom without fear of getting abused (where teacher's are not looking). Things will not likely change, as it is a cultural issue. In fact, his teacher would hit him for being different.

This is 2019. People are getting more closely connected, through social media and the ease of air transport. People are living in a global community. Bi-racial marriages are to be expected. The people who ostracised others based on their skin colour and outward appearance must have been living under a rock. This beauty queen was chosen and crowned by a panel of Japanese judges,I believe. I myself live in a multi-racial nation. Our past beauty queens have included Pan-asians and Eurasians. They have all been cheered on and congratulated. Societies must be more inclusive to all, especially towards their own home-grown citizens who just happen to look unique & are representing their own country on an international platform.

It's bc her phenotype does not correlate with the vast majority of Japan's appearance, and they're a fairly homogenous society without much access to other races so of course the people would be conflicted since they don't see that much mixed race Japanese on a daily basis. People need to put this into perspective
