With planet-warming carbon dioxide levels the highest they've been in millions of years, many farmers say record-breaking high temperatures are affecting their crops. One farmer is taking part in an unusual experiment to try and cut carbon emissions while improving his soil and crops.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

Wouldn't the C02 just get released again in the winter due to soil respiration?

Given that this dust (among others) is a carcinogen, he needs PROPER air filtration for himself during application (stirring it up). I highly doubt this scales across the economy...

They are not spraying dust on crops. They are basically adding minerals to the soil.

Clearly there are a lot of skeptics. I prefer to let the data speak. This is something I will continue to learn about.

Someone with CBS should have asked how they get this concrete dust. Explain the process...yeah.

Can't we use the animal poop to add organic matter back to the soil and help it hold onto more water. And then add wood chips just call the tree trimmers they cut hundreds every day in summer. The wood will hold onto the soil and more water after its broken down it does the same but it adds more structure to the soil after it's no longer wood. Also doing that will add the co2 there concerned about into the soil how well poop and wood is made from co2 and other things so if it becomes the soil it adds co2 to the soil get it 😂.

I just don't know where to start about how stupid mineralization salting of soil actually is. Look at Mesopotamia.
@42base13
@42base13 3 күн бұрын
Illinois has enough natural rainfall to flush excess salts out of the topsoil. Mesopotamia isn't a valid comparison.

It should work well on acid soils. There is a fair amount of alkalinity in the Portland cement. There will be other minerals in the aggregate that is crushed along with everything else. However they will have to keep an eye on the pH of neutral and alkaline soils and add buffers as needed.

Good lord, you people know nothing about farming. The dust goes on the dirt, not the produce. I don't hear any of you complaining about chemical or natural fertilizer on the ground. Let's hope it works..
@HiThisIsMine

This may be a little embarrassing, but you don’t seem to know much about farming.. or consumers, either. People have been complaining about pesticides for years. Also, fertilizers and irrigation water have long been the source of E. Coli. contamination in produce and the reason for many food recalls.

@@HiThisIsMine maybe don't put raw waste water on the food and it wont carry ecoli risk. That's embarrassing. Farmers need to build soil not lay concrete and other chemicals on the earth. Some are killing the land daily.

@@jul.escobar - It’s not “raw wastewater”, it’s contaminated irrigation water. Maybe you have a better idea of how to provide the world’s farms with millions of gallons of clean water every month?

It still costs more than organic farming and permaculture, AND do you know how much carbon was released when they mined that cement?
@brucebosshardt3904
@brucebosshardt3904 Күн бұрын
Permaculture is the best way to farm. It forces all rain and snow run off to percolate into the ground and make the soil more fertile. If every landowner used permaculture practices, we wouldnt have a shortage of water, food, or trees/plants to soak up carbon.

You know what else takes carbon out of the air and puts it in the soil? Plants. Growing a cover crop will probably do a lot more good than this.
