Know I'm way late to this, Keith, but I completely disagree. I'm double majoring in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering right now, and have used Sal's videos every step of the way (not his software, but again, we're talking K-12, not junior and senior university level work). His videos were essential to my success in Physics 1 (kinematics), 2 (electricity and magnetism), much of 3 (modern Physics and relativity), along with Calculus 1, 2, and 3... If we're talking about education on the k-12 level, Khans work can absolutely educate more kids all the way into Calculus 3 (advanced Calc is what HS's call it?) and college level physics (Freshman level anyway, which is all a HS student would be doing).

I've used Khan academy for assistance with my college math class. In some colleges, mine included, you are expected to teach yourself math. Our math classes are online and class is one day a week for 50 mins.You can imagine how difficult it is to ask the professor for help on problems you're not getting AND 35 other people need help too. I can't describe in words how much Khan Academy has helped me. I'll be getting an A in a 5 credit math class thanks to Sal Khan and Bill Gates' Foundation.

Mastering concepts at the student's own pace is a great method, I'm glad it is catching on in public school. Being homeschooled this was a normal part of my upbringing; I was able to advance rapidly in areas I had strengths in without being held back, and when a subject was challenging I took extra time if needed. Thus, each subject was in a different grade level. We did this all with text books and paper records, but I can see computers making the task of tracking the progress of a classroom much more efficient and feasible.

to continue my point... There will also be those students who excel and the teacher could then challenge these children accordingly. This kind of approach -- attending to different types of students -- requires training and expertise, therefore I think a career in education is not only going to be necessary but I see it growing.

@mikaelfalk67208 жыл бұрын
The pages in a book are static, which can make some topics difficult to explain. Describing a 10-step process in detail might require 10 pictures and several lines of explaination, which generally is too much information to fit into a book, so some steps are usually skipped over in order to compress the information, making it harder for a reader to grasp. The alternative is to simply describe the process in words, but that makes it more abstract and increases the likelyhood that a reader will misinterpret the description. A video with 30 frames per second and a voice recording can more efficently describe a range of problems, solutions and processes. In addition, the software keeps track of what you understand well and what you need to practice. It is smart and interactive in a way books are not.
