Hollywood actors formally went on strike after negotiations between their union and motion picture studios collapsed, a serious blow for the entertainment industry that could cripple film and TV productions across the U.S. "You share the wealth, because you cannot exist without us," SAG-AFTRA president and actor Fran Drescher said at a news conference.

It's women like Fran Drescher and Dolly Parton that we need more of. We need that passionate fight for equality for the lower and middle class, for women and children, for labor workers throughout all industries. This was such a powerful speech that i hope anyone who is a labor worker will be insoired by, and for any boss no matter what position will take to heart. Without the labor workers, the ones who put 50-60 hour weeks, the ones who take care of the little jobs and details, the ones who make sure we have food, clothing, utilities and other services we rely on, we as a society would fail. We are past the point of treating others so unfairly to the point where it seems like workers are more like servants.

@@anactualalpaca7016I think you are missing the point. There’s a believe that actors are millionaires and that’s not true. You have movie / tv stars and the rest. If you are in the rest category then you aren’t making much money. You are basically a contractor going from job to job until you break out. I think this whole situation affects everyone. They wanted to propose a deal where they give extras a one time payment, scan them, and use their likeness forever. That’s crazy. If the suits have their way, other companies will do the same. A lot of tech and entry type jobs to AI. It’s actually kinda wild. The world is slowing starting to turn into what fiction says the future would look like and we are starting to realize that it’s not fun. Disney really opened Pandora’s box when they used AI for the intro of their shows.

I'm not a native speaker. Could somebody explain me why the journalists at this conference are always referring to the guild members as "guys"? is that some traditional treatment? For example, if today I am "sir", or a "mister" who is a bank manager, if tomorrow I am in a labor union meeting I will be a "guy" there? Honestly, I don't want to be moralist. I am not really concerned about how polite are those words. I am just trying to understand what's the background of the word "guy" in this case. Are the questioners just trying to being cool? or are they basically patronizing like "you kids, nice to see you together, now stop messing the house"?

She's not wrong. This isnt about the Tom Cruises, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts not getting their money and benefits. Its about the sound guys, the special affects guys, the makeup artists, the camera people. Its about how they arent being treated fairly. This is the big names in the industry standing up for the little guys. When the little guys, which out number the celebrity actors and directors, dont get paid properly, it means their trips to the hair dresser, grocery store, malls and such decrease or disappear. People dont realize the hollywood machine is tied to the service industry. Hotels, hairdressers, restuarants, camera companies, chauffeurs, clothing manufacturers. There are litterally millions of people who rely on the industry to provide for their families directly or indirectyl. A strike is the worst thing for everyone on all sides, but the ceo's and wallstreet are too greedy to care. Such a sad day for the industry when the people in charge want to keep more in their pockets and pay their workers less.

I certainly appreciate the positions of these workers, and would not disagree that they should be respected and paid accordingly. And certainly the people at the top can afford a smaller paycheck to make things right for the striking workers. But I have to say that there is a sea change happening in the entertainment industry that is not generally being acknowledged. I want to write a few paragraphs here, but I'll make it short. If this strike goes on for any length of time, jobs will not come back. Movie going audiences are just not there any more as first COVID , then the terrible economy, has forced people to make serious cuts in their going out budgets. Hollywood is long past its hey day. Good luck getting a job in the buggy whip factory.

Amen!! Thank you Fran Drescher I am in a different industry but these same problems are affecting labor all across the country and world. The priority of corporations is greed, to keep the most money possible, not to share an appropriate amount of their wealth with workers. This has to change - people need to start being vocal about this and following their words up with actions: strengthening unions, spreading awareness, and striking. We can no longer be bullied, dishonored, disrespected, and taken advantage of. It’s ridiculous. Workers are partners in wealth creation so we should be treated as partners!

Her voice is like home. This is truly beautiful, and just for the naysayers this is not just for the actors you see on the screen and immediately recognize this is also (and mainly for) those who are in the background getting paid fractions of what the big shots make. It’s for the writers who put in years of their time to shows that we enjoy and the movies we watch and love. My mother and I always get told we sound like this lady and we get taken less serious because of it but it’s inspiring to see her in such a powerful movement and using her voice for good.

I expect he is also completely ignorant of the actual core of this conflict. The change in the business model she is referring to is the studio's interest in recording performers likeness in 3D and, with out future recompense or residuals, using that likeness to create content. Without any talent involved whatsoever. Forever. Lacking actual people to support every trade that operates alongside acting then becomes obsolete. Hair, makeup, costume, craft services, grips, roadies, the car service guys.... Poof gone. SAG is deliberately making this public because, as Madam Chairman herself said, we are at a crossroads in history...

However, the executives who pull in millions based upon the hard work of the devoted laborers in IATSE, WGAEast and WGAWest, and SAG-AFTRA, are greedy and clueless about what it means to struggle to make a livable wage. We often take them for granted. The big stars and A-Listers make tons of money for sure, but most actors and writers earn modest salaries, and I have to go from job to job, sometimes without work, or a means to pay their bills. This is real work even though a lot of people think it’s a game and frivolous. Actors singers musicians all kinds of performers have been with us since we crawled out of the primordial ooze. They deserve to be compensated just like everyone else for their work.

She moved me to passionate tears. She’s right. I think a lot of people see this strike as a bunch of whining , privileged actors and writers, but the huge majority of writers and actors that belong to the unions are not wealthy, do a ton of work that yields major profits for producers/CEOs, and rely on their small residuals and guarantees to pay their rent or mortgage, and buy food to feed their families. This IS a labor issue. And she’s right about everyone watching, because if workers do not stand together, people that capitalize on the workers will continue to push back, while workers will lose rights.
