Even if you find someone that can rule fairly, the public will never believe they're impartial. So yeah, if you have a history of advocating for radical environmental measures, guns (pro or anti), abortion, or any other wedge issue then you should never be allowed to become a judge. Getting people that are 100% objective will never happen, but you at least need the optics of someone that is willing to call balls and strikes how they see them, at least if you want the public to have faith in the courts.

Yeah, much of our problems over the last couple decades is the lopsided amount of executive power relative to the other branches. Since at least Obama's first term (maybe prior) there's been new records of executive order's set by every following admin. POTUS is effectively a king at this point. Executive order's need to be greatly curtailed and SCOTUS needs an enforcement arm. "Checks and balances" only works if each branch holds equal power

Trump would definitely try to pack the court, whether his party will back him is a question. I hope he doesn't. Bottom line - don't start things that you might not like the outcome to be.

@@nickman0421 There are many courts. FDR tried to pack the Supreme Court. Just recently, the Democrats were calling for the same thing. The bill that Biden vetoed did not have anything to do with putting more judges on the Supreme Court, but was designed to increase judges within the federal court system. Bottom line....get your facts straight before posting.
