It's call deflecting. It's a minapulation and control tactic used by the guilty person trying to get you to stop and see them as a victim. Being overly defensive is a sign of guilt. His behavior was like a kid who just got caught and trying to talk their way out getting in trouble. It's classic of a narcissist being called out with the truth.
