10,000 *largely unvetted* food additives and nobody bats an eye. Then someone suggests restricting the [insert UPF food name here] and suddenly they're evil incarnate. Someone really said "I don't want to do the paperwork for basic ingredients" a few decades ago, and now they don't have to do the paperwork for the crazy stuff that actually needs the paperwork. They took the easy way out.
@lars28943 ай бұрын
Nope. This is common knowledge. America has some of the healthiest food options compared to the rest of the world. So consuming chemicals is down to a personal CHOICE, not due to any lack of information. Most people outside of the US don't even have options like pasture raised heirloom breed meats and non-dairy additive-free yogurts.

I genuinely believe this is the single most important issue faced by America today, bar none. There is nothing more crucial, individually and collectively, than a person's health - both mental and physical. The food we ingest into our bodies is the primary driver of our health or lack thereof. Think about it: we're literally taking physical matter and putting it inside ourselves. Getting this right is absolutely critical. Why is this THE most important issue? Consider these points: 1. The astronomical costs of chronic diseases linked to poor diet are crippling our healthcare system and economy. We spend far more on chronic disease treatment/management than we do on war. 2. Our quality of life and longevity are directly tied to what we eat. Health is intrinsically important. Without good health, nothing else matters. 3. Mental health, cognitive function, and even societal behavior are influenced by nutrition. Productivity, criminality, living harmoniously with others: all these things are influenced by our mental health, which we are more and more finding is tied to what food we eat. 4. A healthy population is more productive, creative, and capable of tackling other pressing issues. At a personal level, we should all strive to make the best dietary choices possible. But this isn't just about individual responsibility. As a society, we cannot stand idly by while corporate greed and corruption continue to profit from our sickness, addiction, and ignorance. We need to take action: 1. Ban all marketing of ultra-processed food products directed at children. Full stop. I’d go further with banning commercials on tv - like cigarettes - but that’s not gonna happen anytime soon. 2. Implement stark warning labels on ultra-processed foods, similar to cigarette packs, stating they're known to lead to adverse health outcomes and can potentially be addictive. 3. Launch massive public education campaigns about the dangers of ultra-processed foods and the benefits of whole foods. 4. Incentivize the production and accessibility of healthier food options, and disincentivize the production of junk food by implementing stricter regulations, more aligned with other developed countries. The food we eat shapes every aspect of our lives and our nation's future. It's time we treat this issue with the urgency it deserves and take bold steps to reclaim our health from the jaws of the ultra-processed food industry. Denormalize the ubiquity of ultraprocessed foods in our life and culture. We need to shift our cultural attitude towards ultra-processed foods. Just as saying "I could go for a cigarette" now often elicits concern rather than encouragement, we should react similarly to casual mentions of fast food cravings. Instead of laughing or agreeing when someone says "I could go for some Taco Bell," we should recognize this as a potentially harmful impulse.

Not to mention the amount of fruits I was surrounded by in the Caribbean: mangoes, guineps, Apples, bananas, sugar cane, wild raspberries, naseberries, tamerinds. We did have fast food like KFC and later on even Burger King. But those were once in a while treats, like maybe at the end of the month or on a Friday night. Sometimes, it would be a two piece chicken combo shared between 5 people. Recently I had a delicious bacon cheese burger with fries and a coke at a food court. Unfortunately politics and food are tied together. During the pandemic DJT laid off 30,000 FDA employees..including scientists who are in charge of food safety. You have to be aware of which politicians' campaigns are greased by these greedy food companies and vote accordingly.

I interviewed for a data scientist job at PepsiCo a while back. The role was all about using AI and machine learning to boost marketing. They use really advanced math to sell as much of their products as they can, and most of their stuff (except for a few like Quaker Oats) isn’t exactly healthy-think sodas and chips. They even use scientific methods to make their food so irresistible that you can’t stop eating it. PepsiCo doesn’t have any reason to want to sell less. We’re seeing issues with ultra-processed foods and health problems like high blood pressure in the U.S., partly because we’re pretty well-off (food costs less of our income compared to other countries) and because these ultra-processed foods are super tasty. Omg I can’t believe Crystal died! RIP! I can’t deny my addiction to ultra processed foods. It’s not the price. Most of the time it’s laziness. It’s time consuming to prepare a fresh meal and as someone who like diversity in day to day meals, I’m hitting up the Popeyes drive through after 3 days of meal prep. I pray I get it together soon because I’m already overweight but I let myself go this summer smh

Look into healthier convenient options like unsweetened beef jerky, string cheese, bananas and other accessible fruit, ready-to-eat chicken, ready-to-eat eggs (e.g., hard boiled), nuts, and whole milk. These are not superfoods, but they’re convenient and a lot healthier than anything you’ll get at a fast food restaurant.

The only person in this video that mentioned "FAST FOOD" RESTAURANTS IS Crystal. She said that was her diet. She said she cut back on fast food a month prior to the interview. She died a few days later from a blod clot and hypertension. Here's the problem - you talk all about "ultra-processed" food, yet ONLY focus on what Americans get from the grocery store. These days, the majority of food that people, such as Crystal, get in their diet comes from FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS - take out, drive-thru and Door Dash-type delivery. ALL FOOD FROM FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS IS ULTRA PROCESSED, with the HIGHEST LEVELS of known bad chemicals and ingredients. Yet, somehow, the producers of this video LEAVE OUT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS COMPLETELY! 🤫 I wonder why?
@Aaron.Thomas3 ай бұрын
That's true - regular restaurants can get you really nice low processed food if you look (one here gets daily farmers market items) but fast food by very definition is ultra processed. If it wasn't ultra processed it wouldn't be called fast food. Subsequent reports ought to mention that more.

I hear people addicted to this upf stuff complain that "healthy food" (as though their idea of healthy was even close to reality) doesn't taste as good, is boring, etc. They think people who eat healthy don't like the taste of their food or can't be excited about it? They seem to not be aware that junk food is an acquired taste. That your taste reception literally changes to accommodate your diet. When you eat less salty food your taste buds adapt and find the less salty stuff just as good. They've adapted their taste away from normal food and think normal food isn't normal tasting anymore (amd of course taste for them trumps all other factors).

You know Japan has less food regulation than the US. In fact among developed countries they are least regulated. I think the problem is more cultural. When i went to Japan I noticed even busy folks focus on eating nutrient dense food like Miso Soup, Natto, and also teach youngsters to eat right.

That’s actually taught in schools, and kids learn basic cooking skills in school too. In the US, practical everyday skills of any kind are usually sectioned off into elective classes or after-school clubs, and they have been for decades. A lot of Americans reach adulthood with minimal, if any, skills related to planning and preparing meals, and it absolutely shows.

An oldster now, if I eat "convenience" foods the negative effect on how I actually feel is very obvious. I've eaten snack foods from other countries and they are definitely much better. Not so greasy and fluorescent and taste better and don't have the weird sick feeling afterwards. I'll still buy pretzels once in a while, and pop my own popcorn, but things like potato chips are now gross, rather than good. Even candy and other sweets familiar from my youth are no longer good and that isn't because of my aging taste buds, it is because of their lousy ingredients.

In my opinion, I feel as if it is the food companies and the pharmaceutical companies working almost in tandem against us. If the food supply gets better and people start eating more healthy foods, then the need for pharmaceuticals will decrease. Keeping us hooked on unhealthy food generates profits for the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals...as well as gymnasiums, the diet industry, and even the clothing industry as people's clothing size fluctuates when they try to lose weight. What's shocking is how different the food is in say, Canada or the EU vs the U.S., many ingredients and additives that are common here are outlawed in other countries. Edit: just saw the very end of the video. Heartbreaking...so sad for that young girl.

I love the poor guy in this film demonstrating ultra processed plant based milk with tons of sugar. He is obese, then of course they list the health impacts, obesity, etc. Sadly. Fortunately, I have never eaten any of this crap, nor will I. Now there might be other reasons why this man was overweight, and I did not say to to put him down in any way. I am just making a point as an example. But honestly ultra processed, even like cheetos or potato chips, etc. that are spicy that taste amazing are very dangerous for our health. As an epidemiologist, when these companies suggest that there is no causality of health effects. In that, there are other contributors. True. However, there have been so many cases where those who were consuming ultra processed foods regularly, once they stopped and ate fresh vegetables and improved their nutrition with real food they suddenly became healthier, had more energy, slept better, and reduced stress.

I've been looking after my 81-year-old mom for thirty years, taking her to the doctor at least four times a month, and she was on 13 pills a day. After switching her diet to healthier options with fresh and whole foods and cutting out 95% of ultra-processed foods, I saw a huge change. Now, she visits the doctor just once every six months and is down to 3 pills. She's healthier than she was decades ago. After seeing this transformation, I decided to dive into the healthy foods business, starting with pure, unrefined Palmyra palm sugar since sugar is a big issue. Palmyra palm sugar is made from the flower sap of the Palmyra palm tree and doesn't go through much processing. It's got a low glycemic index and keeps all its nutrients.
