Wire fraud scams expanding

CBS News is investigating a crime that targets the life savings of a growing number of Americans: Scammers tricking people into wire transferring money. CBS News New York's Tim McNicholas reports.

Why blame the bank? You foolishly followed instructions from a voice on the phone (or a text?). It's awful but - is your refrigerator running? My stepfather, in his 90s, fell for two phone scams which fortunately I got sidetracked before he lost any money. He wasn't stupid but he was brought up in a different time and believed these con artists. Go to the bank or get their phone number from your statement, anywhere but the caller id or what 'they've' told you.

I dont think you understand how slick these scammers are now.. i used to do atleast 3-5 wire transfers a year and this year i almost got scammed. The scammer somehow got into an email thread between me and a client and emailed me about sending them a wire transfer with ALMOST similar email address as the the person i was communicating with. The only difference between the 2 emails was 1 LETTER!! These scammers are extremely slick and with A.I getting better everyday its only going to get worse..

@@10E123 This is common with real estate transactions in which one or more parties have been compromised. Scammer will wait for the right moment and then interject with bogus wire instructions. The underlying issue is that phone calls, texts, and emails can't be solely trusted. Important to verify out of band. Even if that means doing so in person. Some settlement companies won't provide wire instructions in writing, but rather a link that shows it. Would never accept that, but many don't understand how risky that is and go along with it. Rambling on. Can't trust electronic communications alone. Dial back using a trusted number, meet in person, etc. Video and voice impersonation is increasingly happening, though still a rarity. Eventually I foresee many sensitive business deals and meetings happening in person. What's old is new again, but I digress.

Many are dupped due to being unaware of the lack of security with technology. Phone numbers, including for texts, is easily spoofed and can show anything, including the name of their bank. Email addresses are also easily spoofed. Even if address is real, server could be compromised allowing bogus emails to be sent. Basically, electronic communications can't be solely trusted, but many don't know or understand how bad the situation is. It's a minefield out there. AI generated fake video and voice is an emerging threat that further raises the stakes. Having a codeword / phrase can help, but few have taken that precaution. Also, not always practical. In short, many barely understand tech let alone its limitations and security flaws which are so numerous that one basically can't trust any of it alone. Important to verify out of band and still be wary.

Bank wires should have the same protections as other types of electronic fund transfers. As of now, wires are exempt from many consumer protection laws. Many don't know that.

Sadly, the bank can require a 24-48 hour grace period before the transaction can be finalized but some customers will see it as an “inconvenience”.

So you wire $25K to buy something that you haven't seen, and its the bank's fault? If I were spending that much money, I'd insist that they do a video call with me and do a live walk-around of the car. You can also ask them to send you a specific pic that isn't on the web site. And even at that I would probably want to go in person to pick it up and hand over a check.

A good solution would be to force an escrow account for transactions. This would require paperwork and fees, but will significantly reduce scams. Unfortunately this will only make the bad guy to look for other way to exploit the system.
