In general, I don't enjoy classic horror tales adapted for radio because they are substantially changed and/or truncated. In this case, though, someone did a rather good job with this Bulwer-Lytton story (also known as The Haunter and the Haunted). Thanks for sharing this.

Every adaptation of any story to any media is never fully true to the original. Just read Harry Potter and then watch the movies.

I always assume that a human being has a fair chance of thinking its way out of the situation. The animal likely entered into the equation not realizing it might need an exit strategy in the first place.

That image is my dream house ... So wonderfully macabre 😍 The story here was also adapted in the children's album "Alfred Hitchcock Presents Ghost Stories for Young People". kzbin.info/www/bejne/sInTaIyJYrOKiM0 Hitch introduces each of a handful of spooky tales that feature one narrator/actor and sound effects and music. Not bad at all for its time-- had to have been made in the mid to late 1960's. I remember Hitchcock, in his interstitials, was trying to deal with a dripping faucet which progressed into a massive flood in the house.

The version on the Hitchcock album is compressed to less than 15 minutes (maybe a lot less) so there's only enough time for the part of the plot that's a straight-up ghost story and nothing about a human intelligence causing the events in the house. There are at least four audiobooks of the original story available on YT. I like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJealIylnMSrh68 The CBSRMT version is pretty close to Bulwar-Lytton's story except Sam Dann invented an additional plotline of his own, about a sinister character who's lived over a hundred years and wants to use his powers of hypnotism and telekinesis to become a world-dominating demagogue.
