In general, I don't enjoy classic horror tales adapted for radio because they are substantially changed and/or truncated. In this case, though, someone did a rather good job with this Bulwer-Lytton story (also known as The Haunter and the Haunted). Thanks for sharing this.

So wonderfully macabre 😍 The story here was also adapted in the children's album "Alfred Hitchcock Presents Ghost Stories for Young People". kzbin.info/www/bejne/sInTaIyJYrOKiM0 Hitch introduces each of a handful of spooky tales that feature one narrator/actor and sound effects and music. Not bad at all for its time-- had to have been made in the mid to late 1960's. I remember Hitchcock, in his interstitials, was trying to deal with a dripping faucet which progressed into a massive flood in the house.

The version on the Hitchcock album is compressed to less than 15 minutes (maybe a lot less) so there's only enough time for the part of the plot that's a straight-up ghost story and nothing about a human intelligence causing the events in the house. There are at least four audiobooks of the original story available on YT. I like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJealIylnMSrh68 The CBSRMT version is pretty close to Bulwar-Lytton's story except Sam Dann invented an additional plotline of his own, about a sinister character who's lived over a hundred years and wants to use his powers of hypnotism and telekinesis to become a world-dominating demagogue.
