@stealthmodeltv2399 Baseball changed the rules to make it easier to steal bases today. They increased the size of the bases, and they've limited the amount of times a pitcher can throw over to hold the runners. If Rickey played today, he'd average 120 stolen bases a year, easy.

He was Nolan's 5000 strikeout, and Nolan got him with straight up gas. I remember in the interview he said, "Of course Rickey knew what was coming, everyone knew what was coming. If Nolan hasn't struck you out, you ain't no one." He went down swinging too, he was damn well gonna go down trying to catch up to it. God Speed Rickey, you were one of a kind.

@scottrackley4457 well that's not true. Ruth, Aaron, Cobb, Mays, Speaker, Wagner, Hornsby and more are ahead of him in WAR. And, not the day, but the elevation of his stats in 1990 (first full season back with A's...with Canseco and McGwire) indicate to me he at least tried them. Career high in slugging by far. MVP award too. Also, dude never seemed to allow his late 30s to affect him. Not enough to ruin his reputation, but not a fun coincidence.

This is heavy news , My all time favorite and I got to see him play growing up and I copied everything he did I wanted to be Rickey . The good lord blessed me earlier this year as he came to my work and I had a chance to meet him and talk to him and shake his hand . He was really nice and I am grateful I was able to meet my childhood hero the legendary Rickey Henderson . RIP to the best lead off hitter of all time ! There will never be another Rickey !

I've watched Rickey play baseball all of my life. I remember going to the Oakland Coliseum as a kid, eating a delicious steak sandwich, and waiting for him to steal a base or hit a homerun. RIP, Batman, Man of Steal . I will never forget you.

One of the best players of all time. Most intimidating lead off hitter in the history of the game. I remember he practically carried the A's Team in the early eighties when Billy Martin was the manager. Raised in Oakland and did well for the Oakland A's. Never thought this guy would go at this time in his life. My father used to go to the games when " Billy Ball" was a thing. 8,000 fans at Oakland stadium was common back then.

As a leadoff hitter you have 3 jobs, get on base, get into scoring position, and score. He had an OBP of over .400 for 25 years, making him one the best at getting on in the history of baseball. He was the all time best at getting into scoring position, and he was the all time leader in scoring runs. Easily the greatest leadoff hitter of all time.

Mr. Double Steal. Just amazing to have been lucky to attend dozens of A's games in the 1980s. Mr. Henderson was only a year older than me so it is extra sad to see him pass at only 65 years of age. The older we get the more we want to believe we will reach at least 80 or more. Damn! The best memories from the coliseum were before Mount Davis replaced the center field IVY and the view of the BART trains coming and going from the upper deck behind home plate. My favorite seats were behind home in the third deck. RIP Mr. Henderson.
