@justinmsc5

It's a rule problem, not an umpire problem. Every baseball player is taught that you have to do everything you can to get out of the way. Even if it's impossible to get out of the way, it's your fault. The only "players" who don't know this are kids pre-little league, and super casuals.

if the man playing short stop was the only guy able to catch the ball and the runner interfered with him then I'd say yeah call interference, however, at least 4 guys COULD have caught that ball: pitcher, 3rd baseman, 2nd baseman, short stop. and 3 of them would not have been interfered with in the play. so I call BS on the call.
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 3 күн бұрын
@@JamesShelnutt2 It's a ridiculous ruling either way but the top poster of this comment thread is right that it's the whole point of the rule. Just 1 fielder gets the protection of fielding a batted ball which means if the runner doesn't do enough to avoid him then it's interference.

Ok, while the call may be correct, the rule is terrible. I dislike the White Sox, but the rule is BS. Henderson barely touched him, just slightly altered his path, and got under the ball with plenty of time. Vaughn was just walking back to the bag. That is a terrible rule.

@@DonaldDump2024 Given there's a lot of precedent for this call and the MLB hasn't commented or modified the notes/FAQ (for umpires) at all, can't really say it's a terrible ruling. Just adding words like "that affects or had a high likelihood to affect the outcome" would signal what to do for umpires. So I'd say terrible rule, not terrible ruling. Tons of precedent, and players are explicitly trained as if this is how it'll be called.

Misapplication of the interference rule. In order for the In-field-fly rule to be enforced the defense player has to demonstrate “normal” effort in fielding a fly ball when 1-2 or 1-2-3 bases are occupied with less than two out. This is demonstrated when the defense player camps under the ball. It is only at this time that the umpire will verbally declare infield fly rule, the hitter is out (if fair is added when the ball may go into foul ground before it is fielded). In umpire school they emphasize that the baseball diamond is a collision course and the advantage/disadvantage judgement must be weighted on every instance of players contacting one another because that alone is not basis for a ruling. This is an example of that. Game should have been protested on the misinterpretation and/or misapplication of a rule.
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 3 күн бұрын
sadly that's how the interference rule is written at least for MLB, the runner is sadly obligated to do whatever possible to AVOID the fielder that's fielding a batted ball. It's a terrible ruling and something that I would be changing if I had the power to do so but only MLB has the power to do so. Also MLB games can no longer be protested, MLB changed that awhile ago to ban that practice.

I absolutely agree with the merit of this call. The same way that I'd agree with a police officer who gave a speeding ticket to someone going 66 in a 65. It is technically speeding. In both cases, the enforcement of such a minute infraction is counterproductive and a bit absurd.

A lot of bad information in here thinking this was “technically the right call”. It is a judgment call whether the fielder was hindered from making the play. @donh6416
@donh6416 14 күн бұрын
@topstarsk I'm going to disagree. The rule penalizes the offense immediately because the ball becomes dead immediately. Whatever else occurs is not relevant. So, in this case it did make any difference if the ball was caught or not. Batter was already out (due to infield fly). Remember that penalties are designed to negate the violation. It is not a delayed dead ball wait and see what happens enforcement. I think it does what it is intended to do.
@zacomalley1825
@zacomalley1825 13 күн бұрын
It's an infield fly. Batter/runner is out. Ball is dead. As soon as the infield fly is called, the fielder does not need to move an inch. The play is over. If they called interference before the infield fly then possibly, but the infield fly is called before the batter even steps in

how do you think that works? umpires aren't going to call interference if fielders are going out of their way to run into baserunners. the rule is pointed towards the infield having the right of way. lol only simpletons would think that would work or that was what happened in this play.
@moosepasshippie

@@h445 I guess Pedro Grifol is a simpleton. He even said this could be used as an advantage. This just happened again at the NY Vs. Anaheim game. There is going to be a trend.

This is not a correctable error because it is based on the umpire’s judgement. The game must be protested. The replay booth has no say!

@@royalvarez6436 No its not, read the rule book. Or watch a breakdown of the rules here on youtube. You can find 4+ solid explanations including from a former MLB player explaining this rule. They added it in 2013, and it is objectively the correct call

basically the fielder has the right of way to field ANY batted balls and yes this includes on Infield Fly situations because even if an Infield Fly is declared which means the batter is out, the fielder still has to field the ball. Now because of that, it falls to the runner to avoid the fielder, they can't do anything to hinder or impede him from fielding, intent isn't required as long as a runner doesn't have contact with a base he's entitled to.

Stop making excuses. You never liked it if the umps are the reason you stopped. Do you quit a job because you dislike a co-worker? I hope you're not that sensitive. If life hands you a pile of shit, do you quit your life? Definitely not, you're not dead right? Stop making fucking excuses and own up to your own choices.

Interference? Wouldn't it have to be a broken play that "caused" interference??
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 2 күн бұрын
I'm afraid not, intent doesn't matter when you have a runner off base interfering with a fielder fielding a batted ball, all that matters is whether 1. the runner avoided the fielder and 2. did the runner do anything to hinder or impede the fielder

How can the call infield fly rule and interference in the same play?
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 2 күн бұрын
basically because the fielder in question still has to field a batted ball, the batter being out due to the Infield Fly being declared doesn't remove the fielder's right of way with fielding a batted ball.

Didn’t realize you can’t walk back to the bag after the fly rule was called, even so when it’s called it’s an out regardless, so technically he could have not caught it and nothing would’ve happened

That is not true. The infield fly rule does not result in a "dead ball" situation, the runners may advance, at their own risk.
@1drink2drink-ty4fj
@1drink2drink-ty4fj 16 күн бұрын
You can walk back if you don't interfere. AntonelliBaseball advises the runner to return to the bag ASAP. There's no advantage to casually walking back like that, and if the runner is standing on the base there's no interference.
