@justinmsc513 күн бұрын
It's a rule problem, not an umpire problem. Every baseball player is taught that you have to do everything you can to get out of the way. Even if it's impossible to get out of the way, it's your fault. The only "players" who don't know this are kids pre-little league, and super casuals.

Looking at it now, even though that is the rule of the law, but that doesn't look like interference to me.
@JamesShelnutt212 күн бұрын
if the man playing short stop was the only guy able to catch the ball and the runner interfered with him then I'd say yeah call interference, however, at least 4 guys COULD have caught that ball: pitcher, 3rd baseman, 2nd baseman, short stop. and 3 of them would not have been interfered with in the play. so I call BS on the call.
@MattZRJSRoxy3 күн бұрын
@@JamesShelnutt2 It's a ridiculous ruling either way but the top poster of this comment thread is right that it's the whole point of the rule. Just 1 fielder gets the protection of fielding a batted ball which means if the runner doesn't do enough to avoid him then it's interference.

The call is not correct. If you don't know the intent on why the rule was made, you cannot possibly make a correct call. So for you that does not know why the rule was made, no matter what call you make, you're wrong.

@justinmsc513 күн бұрын
@@DonaldDump2024 Given there's a lot of precedent for this call and the MLB hasn't commented or modified the notes/FAQ (for umpires) at all, can't really say it's a terrible ruling. Just adding words like "that affects or had a high likelihood to affect the outcome" would signal what to do for umpires. So I'd say terrible rule, not terrible ruling. Tons of precedent, and players are explicitly trained as if this is how it'll be called.

Misapplication of the interference rule. In order for the In-field-fly rule to be enforced the defense player has to demonstrate “normal” effort in fielding a fly ball when 1-2 or 1-2-3 bases are occupied with less than two out. This is demonstrated when the defense player camps under the ball. It is only at this time that the umpire will verbally declare infield fly rule, the hitter is out (if fair is added when the ball may go into foul ground before it is fielded). In umpire school they emphasize that the baseball diamond is a collision course and the advantage/disadvantage judgement must be weighted on every instance of players contacting one another because that alone is not basis for a ruling. This is an example of that. Game should have been protested on the misinterpretation and/or misapplication of a rule.
@MattZRJSRoxy3 күн бұрын
sadly that's how the interference rule is written at least for MLB, the runner is sadly obligated to do whatever possible to AVOID the fielder that's fielding a batted ball. It's a terrible ruling and something that I would be changing if I had the power to do so but only MLB has the power to do so. Also MLB games can no longer be protested, MLB changed that awhile ago to ban that practice.

I absolutely agree with the merit of this call. The same way that I'd agree with a police officer who gave a speeding ticket to someone going 66 in a 65. It is technically speeding. In both cases, the enforcement of such a minute infraction is counterproductive and a bit absurd.

@donh641614 күн бұрын
@topstarsk I'm going to disagree. The rule penalizes the offense immediately because the ball becomes dead immediately. Whatever else occurs is not relevant. So, in this case it did make any difference if the ball was caught or not. Batter was already out (due to infield fly). Remember that penalties are designed to negate the violation. It is not a delayed dead ball wait and see what happens enforcement. I think it does what it is intended to do.
@zacomalley182513 күн бұрын
It's an infield fly. Batter/runner is out. Ball is dead. As soon as the infield fly is called, the fielder does not need to move an inch. The play is over. If they called interference before the infield fly then possibly, but the infield fly is called before the batter even steps in
