Stop-motion animation requires some serious dedication! You'd have to have a giant load of patience to make these movies work. My respect for the animators is infinite.

Same with early hand-drawn Disney animations. It blows my mind. But I guess if you have very good and detailed planning it makes the process less daunting.

If you haven't seen it, see the Norwegian movie called "The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" from 1975. It's 24fps stop motion (which is nuts. at 88 minutes long, that means 112320 unique frames). It's a timeless classic and the one of the most successful Norwegian movies of all time. 5 people spent 3.5 years making it. And it was this movie that actually inspired Christian von Koenigsegg to start making cars 😊

@@FabledGentleman thanks for the tip on the PInchcliff Grand Prix movie. I found it and started watching. BTW, the earliest stop motion I watched and loved was Gumby and David and Goliath. And also there were a couple Christmas ones I enjoyed like "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". What fascinated me was how they created those worlds. I think that AI will get good enough that a rendition of stop motion will be possible with a lot less labor and increasing quality at the same time. And I am hoping they branch out into creating these stop motion environment worlds for VR games and immersion

My dream or my dream job is being a animator in big companies like aardman! But it’s true dedication is needed to like acting out the scene. And doing that is the funnest thing that I can dream of doing. I’m not that good but I guess I’m alright

As a kid, I was mesmerized by the 1963 film "Jason & The Argonauts" showcasing the brilliant work of stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen. That sword fight with the skeleton warriors is epic! He also worked on Mighty Joe Young (1949) & Clash of the Titans (1981) - magical stuff! 👏

Ray Harryhausen was the first person I thought of when they were doing this piece. I thought of the Sinbad movies, in addition to the movies you mentioned. Unless I missed it, did they even mention his name in the whole segment? Not even a nod to him?? Geez.

You know? I never thought Chicken Run would get a sequel and unfortunately it took 23 years for a sequel to show up. Oh and there’s sad news. Some people who voiced characters in the first movie sadly died before the second movie came out and I thought the people who are making the second Chicken Run movie were being mean to the people who died before the sequel came out because they don’t get to see it or know about it! Which is why I thought that they were being mean to those people.

Hey! The shots with the lines around the mouth are ‘rehearsal’ takes. Rough animation to get a feel of what the final shot will look like. For the real shots the animators smooth the clay so the lines disappear and you get that clean finished look. Hope that helps. 😊

Even if CGI can do this, audiences find a real magic in stop-motion. I do. I remember when I saw "Grand Day Out" in 1989 as part of the Spike and Mike Festival of Animation -- people who had seen it beforehand were gobsmacked and told me that they never have imagined they could sit through a half hour of claymation and be spellbound. As long as audiences march off to see these movies, the "stop-motion vs CGI" argument's been settled.

Mark Wahlberg, John Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, Neil Patrick Harris, Will Ferrell, Channing Tatum, Brendan Fraser, Johnny Knoxville, Ty Burrell, Jon Hamm, Jason Bateman, Paul Rudd and Keanu Reeves were all considered to succeed Mel Gibson as the new voice of Rocky. Emily Blunt and James Marsden were considered to the respective roles of Ginger and Rocky replaced Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson from the first film.

"its just regular clay?" @0:06 yes and no because they've changed the process to include silicone forms that are moulded from a clay sculpt, with the exception of certain areas; normally being around the mouth, secondary action points and contact points like hands, they've switched over to a more cost and recycling friendly way to make puppets. I believe where this technique of faking the look of clay on less important areas is most prevelant is on the production for Early Man(2018). There's some good behind the scenes videos here on youtube and a few really good looks into the process on the adam savage tested channel.
