Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Mississippi band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, is the first Indigenous artist to be chosen to represent the United States with a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, which is considered the Olympics of the art world. Correspondent Seth Doane visits the site of the Biennale, and meets with Gibson at his studio in Upstate New York, where he created his exhibition titled "the space in which to place me."

Beautiful and moving. Jeffrey's vibrant work is energizing and though-provoking. My good friend worked with Jeffrey to make this effort come alive. It's amazing how much love and sweat goes into such a presentation. Well done, Mr. Gibson!

You are so right about that! The best way to “get” art is to buy it and take it home. I love art! 😎💛

Representation is very important. If someone sees someone who looks like them, they know they too can do anything.

I just an ordinary lady artist that agrees the Indigenous people have not been recognized and celebrated enough. The punching bags were a brilliant canvas for your message. Sending love and prayers!

Interesting and colorful art. I like that it doesn't seem to be antagonistic. We don't need more resentment and division.

It's worth mentioning that Gibson also represents the LGBTQIA+ community. Queer artists have also been marginalized, or their sexuality simply ignored. I saw one of his exhibits several years ago at The Brooklyn Museum. He's a truly phenomenal artist. We should be proud to have him represent the USA in the Biennale.

if he identified solely as a native American he would still be pigeon holed, being an artist allows him the identity he wants- he gets to be an individual

I really don’t get his art . It’s not particularly pleasing to the eye and I think his story behind it is a bit all over the place . There is far better Native American art out there with real meaning.
