Preston Singletary, a member of the Tlingit tribe of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, uses a very untraditional medium when fashioning indigenous art: glass. He talks with correspondent Lilia Luciano about his traveling exhibition, "Raven and the Box of Daylight" (now at the Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.), which tells a Native American folktale about the origins of the world entirely through glass.

Absolutely Stunning…..I taught my PNW high schoolers basic ovoid, u-shapes and shadows in our history class…..their appreciation of Native American art manifested itself in stunning sketches…..drawings….replicas of folklore that I believe lives on in their spiritual memory muscle today…….once again the medium of glass comes ALIVE…..

Beautiful! If you think about it, EVERYTHING has to begin somewhere in time. "Traditional" baskets, pottery, wood carvings, woven rugs, silver jewelry etc., had their beginnings when one or more creative person thought outside the box...before becoming widely accepted.

I hope Singletary's exhibit Raven & the Box of Daylight comes to the San Francisco area. I have always loved Tlingit jewelry and carvings & the stories. His work is so beautiful and innovative. Thanks for posting about this marvelous glass maker and kudos for giving a shout out to the man who originally mentored him.

I love this. The peices seem so ethereal... reflecting today and yesterday. Very beautiful and spiritual, like Alaska.

Awesome work!! I’d sure like to review that supposed sale of land. Did the natives get taken, yet again? I’m willing to bet they were tricked like so many many other times.

Imagine thinking that art isn't political! Which video did you watch? He explicitly said that he chose glass as a medium because it relates to glass trade beads. One of the tools that was used to colonize North America. His art is part commentary on colonialism, capitalism, and the genocide of Native Americans. So, you saw and heard him speak about that, and all you thought to yourself was "gee, them colored glass objects sure are pretty"?
