The historic run of "Sabado Gigante" comes to an end

For more than a half-century millions have tuned Saturday nights to watch the zany spectacle that is "Sabado Gigante," the world's longest-running TV variety show. Mo Rocca went behind the scenes to talk with Don Francisco, maestro of the Spanish-language series who's been at the helm since the very beginning.

When I was child living in Puerto Rico, my grandma, my aunt, my mom used to watch this every Saturday. When I moved away we never watched it, until I went to vacation and visited my grandma back in P.R. I sat down and watched because it felt like no time had passed. I haven't been to P.R in 6 years...and hearing his voice and knowing that there will no longer be Sabado Gigante makes me very sad. Just hearing his voice made me tear up because it brought back a lot of memories that I forgot. Gracias, Don Francisco. Por todas las memorias y todos los Sabados.

I know I am a few years late with my comment, but Don Francisco was part of our family. In Puerto Rico every house in the neighborhood would have him on every Saturday. It was impossible to miss anything if I had to go home from my grandmother's house. Great memories. Thank you for doing this report.

He is Hispanic. “Hispanic” means you or your parents come from a Spanish-speaking country. Race and religion do not determine it. You can be Hispanic and a Jew (Don Francisco). You can be Hispanic and black (Celia Cruz). You can be Hispanic and Asian (YongYea). You can be Hispanic and Middle Eastern (Shakira).

I too was fortunate enough to watch "Sábado Gigante" with my late Mother and great grandmother every Saturday for decades. Though I wouldn't watch the entire show, I'd watch bits and pieces whenever I was walking in or out of the living going through the front door. I knew when it was almost bed time when they'd give a car away cause it was almost 11 pm at that time. Lots of memories watching Don Francisco, La Cuatro and El Chacal. 😂 This brought back a lot of memories of my Mom. Thanks Don Francisco.
