A walk in Woodlawn Cemetery

Opened in 1863, Woodlawn Cemetery, in the New York City borough of the Bronx, is comprised of 400 acres of lush wooded landscape populated by some of the most famous names in history. Charles Osgood takes a stroll among Woodlawn's permanent residents. Originally broadcast on October 30, 1988.

I’ve been to my fair share of cemeteries and I can tell you that this one is absolutely stunning. At every turn I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There’s literally small houses built for the deceased.

back in the 80s i worked for a burial vault company on long island. i installed a lot of vaults there. loved to go there, it was like a park, on lunch breaks i would wander around and explore. i've seen all the graves and mausoleums highlighted here. Greenwood cemetery is another must visit.

My father was buried there today, February 23rd, 2019. I love you Dad. He joined my grandparents and my great aunt and uncle.

I went there one Sunday afternoon and had an unplanned walk around. I'm not from America and had never heard of Woodlawn Cemetery. It was a truly wonderful afternoon full of surprises and so peaceful. I'll never be there again, but what a beautiful afternoon it was.

My great grandma, my grandparents my uncles and other ancestors are buried here at Woodlawn. I visit often to Woodlawn and it gives me tremendous pride of my family.

My grandmother is buried here and I visited her about 10 years ago. It was in the spring, and this place looked wonderful. Someday I'll go back and look around again at the combination of interesting architecture as well as beautiful vegetation.

Amen, great history ! I'm going to have the grandkids watch. My dad wanted to join the army in the 40s. His birth certificate burned in a fire. The army guessed and made a new one the fourth of July ! This brought back memories! God bless

My grandparents, great grandmother, uncles are buried in Birch Hill section of Woodlawn Cemetery. It's a peaceful place amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Westinghouse invented several things, not the steam engine. He did invent the brake system on stem engines (trains) along with many electrical aspects.

Interesting fact: John Warne "Bet-a-Million" Gates Mausoleum was used in the movie Once Upon A Time In America.

Specimen trees adorn that special place thanks to Samuel Parsons of Parsons nursery Flushing, LI, NY Those same Linden, Beech, Walnut, Chestnut, and Elms once lined the streets of Flushing framing its beautiful homes. Her people where special. It was a picture postcard town and a wonderful place for an American to call home. As is stated in one of Greenwoods mausoleums, Auf wiedersehen. RAR

If you ever have the opportunity on a nice day it is a really beautiful peaceful place..they used to give you a map where all the graves are. They used to have concerts in the summer but not sure if they still do!

Texaco was founded in Beaumont, Texas as the Texas Fuel Company in 1901, by Jim Hogg, Joseph S. Cullinan, John Warne Gates, and Arnold Schlaet- not just Gates. Barb wire was invented by Joseph Glidden. Gates was a pioneer promoter of barbed wire.
