It's been a little while since I've talked about "CBT" techniques. If you aren't familiar with CBT or “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,” it's a fantastic approach to literally changing the way we think. I'm not going to get deep into what CBT is. I'm going to stay focused on a few CBT tools you can add to your Bipolar toolbox.
PLEASE remember that I'm not a doctor or medical professional. However... I live with severe mental illness every day of my life. I speak from a place of lived experience. That makes a big difference sometimes.

One thing a counselor said to me that has helped me implement a lot of my tools is to practice them when I notice my self going from level 1-3 because by the time I reach 10 I likely won't remember my tools any more. If I can practice them at level one and two and three, etc, eventually they become automatic and I'm be able to pull them out when I hit the ceiling and bring myself down. Thanks again for your awesome videos. They help me feel less alone in the world.

I am so happy for your videos. I feel for once in my life that I have others that are going through similar stuff. It’s tough because I have no one to relate with in my life. Meds haven’t helped much and providers have given me very little insight. Most people think that I’m normal and that I’m faking it. But I am extremely sick of living this way!

Hang in there. The when I was hospitalized it took a couple days to crack and take the meds… it is a hole different world out there once I crawled out of the rabbit hole lol! Once you get your meds right life is pretty good. Some times I completely forget I have bipolar disorder until my alarm goes off when it is time for my meds. It will take a while but it will get better. There is more mental health awareness now and WAY better meds than there was a few years ago. I’m glad we aren’t living back in the day with 1st gen meds and have doctors using us as Lab rats

Great content, i was diagnosed at 17 bipolar dis but something that helped me alot with depresion was to get busy with some kind of activity which i enjoyed(not drugs) like excercising with positive music when i felt lonely, cuz that made me chanel that negative energy into strong positive energy and i've was very introvert but doing excercise gave me alot of confidence and gave me a porpose, now im 30 years old and being patient worked for me cuz im not phisicly as trong as this past 10 year but i met my wife and im happy to be myself even if im not popular, thats ok.

Can't remember the first time I watched on of Rob's videos but was immediately interested because my wife has struggled with bipolar for years. So hard to watch someone you know and love go through all the pain. At times, i doubted Rob wondering how he could seem so genuine yet present himself as this well-spoken, confident and certainly healthy looking person. But after a while I realized that I connected with what he was saying and had seen some of the very ideas through the struggles my wife and I have had. We see Robert at his very best but I know what it's like behind the scenes, so to speak, and have not doubt in his authenticity. Thank you so much for what you do and I have been an advocate for your work for awhile now. Thanks to others that watch this pod who have also posted kind or helpful words to me. bobby miller

I really appreciate your channel, your path. My wife was just diagnosed and besides the diagnosis, I’m trying to learn how to help. Anger, talking too fast, and depression are her main symptoms. She’s been in the hospital for two months and is making progress. Thanks for the balanced advice, I’ve looked elsewhere and your channel has been very helpful. It kind of scares me, so this Cognitive Therapy was perfect timing! Blessings to everyone who has this! You are truly warriors.❤

I've just recently found out that I use A LOT of CBT techniques on a daily basis, which was kind of surprising as I've never studied them in detail on purpose (though I am technically a counsellor/mental health practitioner). I suppose CBT suits me perfectly in many ways, and now I am taking a much closer look at some of those techniques (including the ones mentioned in the video) to benefit from them personally and, a little later and where/when applicable, at work. It's always great to get your videos exactly when you need them the most, thank you.

Some of our fears and jumping to conclusions us ptsd from child abuse so can be even harder to navigate cbt. I agree cbt does work but so does deep rooted fear. Lots of more people could benefit from the cbt if they could see past the 40 or more years of stinking thinking. I have bipolar, adhd, ptsd, and gad so far. I'm 49. I still loose control and my meds are good, it's hard.

In the name of Jesus: I decree that by the stripes of Jesus, I am healed, along with my family. Isaiah 53:5 I decree that God has not given my family the spirit of fear, but of power, love & a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 I decree no weapon formed against me or my family will prosper. Isaiah 54:17 I decree the anointing of the Holy Spirit will break out in my church to fill the building with glory. Miracles, signs, and wonders will follow. Hebrews 2:4 I decree peace in my city, state, nation, and Israel. Psalm 122:6

I came across your videos and wow! they are so helpful and informative. I'm seeing someone who is biopolar/schizoeffective. I have learned so much, and share them with him. He relates to so much of what you describe. One area we need help with is taking his meds when he starts to go into mania. He drinks a lot and will hole up with beer and crazy videos, and go sideways for several days. For the most part he is good with me calling him each night to remind him to take his vraylor and sleep meds; when he starts to get into mania he resists my calls and doesn't take his meds. How can I help him be more in control? Please advise...I will also subscribe to your Patreon channel as well.

I was just introduced to CBT when my mom and fiancé passed two years apart. I was in partial program at our local hospital. I was very excited about it as I could see it would work for my intrusive thoughts, the one and only tool I was taught in 40 years of hospitalizations therapists and psychiatrists. I wrote them out on paper and could feel the change in mood and thoughts. The things you said in the video are very useful to help turn doom into a better frame of mind. Thank you

I read that too. I actually did an outpatient program that incorporated both and i feel that the CBT portion frustrated me but i had yet to be diagnosed with bipolar so i wonder if DBT should have been the focus only/first then CBT. I ended up feeling overwhelmed because how am i supposed to practice mindfulness when i cant even practice distress tolerance 😂

Hi @scottpanek9159! Thanks for taking the time to comment (and a very warm welcome to the Polar Warrior Community). Timing is so important. I'm always more social when in an elevated mood, and much less social when I'm struggling with depression / anxiety / panic. Give her some time to respond, and when she's in a good place to talk, come up with a plan for the next time she loses communication with you. Great video. I have gone through the CBT and DBT workbooks with my counselor and found some of it helpful. I do like what you have selected to highlight in this video with reframing. This helps particularly when you engage in the cognitive distortions of mind reading and black and white thinking which I am guilty of. I always put my mind reading thought in the worse light and coupled with the black and white thinking further ensures the black. It is so important to remember we can’t know what other people think or intend and to be reminded that we are biased due to our illness. Slow down and contemplate situations using these techniques and allow for the grey area to be possible. And who knows, maybe even the white! Thank you for your channel and sharing your struggles and triumphs.
