Thank you so much for actually answering this question!!!!! I have been searching the internet and watching videos for the last two days trying to find someone to explain why we need both a Private IP address and a MAC address.
@decus95449 жыл бұрын
Excellent explanation and much faster than a lot of the more laborious, wandering explanations that never actually get to the point.
@haow902010 жыл бұрын
Why, in the two-address case, don't we use two receiving IP addresses -- one for the router, and one for the destination -- when encapsulating the data? (Then again we can do without the MAC?)
@cbtnuggets10 жыл бұрын
Hao Wang Great thought! ... but that's not how they built it back when the powers to be created networks :o). Keep in mind, we used to live in a world where there was more than just the IP protocol (there used to be IPX, AppleTalk, DecNet, and more). They all relied on a mechanism similar to this to communicate.
@haow902010 жыл бұрын
CBT Nuggets What about using (one or multiple) MAC addresses? We could have avoided introducing all the protocols like IP/IPX/AppleTalk, etc., and based all communications on physical addresses -- Do you think it's a reasonable idea? Thanks for your response.
@cbtnuggets9 жыл бұрын
Hao Wang Perhaps network communication could have worked this way. Thanks for the insight!
@mattgirschick19029 жыл бұрын
CBT Nuggets THIS is what I've been having a really hard time to wrap my head around; It seems counterintuitive. What you're trying to say is that it's this way for no logical reason but because it was necessary to the evolution of networking? Kind of like a patch?
@rigelr53456 жыл бұрын
Finally a proper explanation that doesn't just cover the mere basics. Also I almost always speed my tutorials up to 1.25 or 1.5, didn't have to this time, so I really didn't mind you talking fast (also, people have the ability to slow videos down too lol). Anyway, thanks.

Hey, can you explain me whats the problem if you just send the IP of cbtnuggets.com to the router?
@tarek62914 жыл бұрын
There is no problem. You can ping the ip or access the http page directly from a browser if you know the ip of cbtnuggets.
@leandrawoods85682 жыл бұрын
From what I understood, I believe you can't send two IP addresses at once... So, you first broadcast the router's IP address and the intended router sends back its MAC address. The source then sends the final destination's IP address to the said router using the received MAC address.

So... the 192.168 is like my town the .1 is like my street and .1 is like my house number. And then the MAC address would be me? And if I wanted to send a letter to someone on the otherside of the world I would have to send my letter to the letterbox (router) so then the postman can deliver that letter to that someone on the other side of the world?
