seam rippers are my best friend.. because I'm struggling with sewing straight lines, I spend a lot of time ripping the sewing...

waterbitten I have a couple older machines. They all came with a seam guide, a small metal fence like attachment that slides to fit against the fabric edge a set width from needle. Screws down. When fabric edge is against the guide it is X distance from seam. My granddaughters use a strip of painters tape on bed of their machine to mark seam width. Guide attachment was extra for their machine. Both methods work well.

Pauline Larson Thanks for info! I haven't started yet but going into it I'm mostly concerned I won't be able to sew straight. Google images gave me an understanding of what a seam guide is.

Morgan Field My sons sew. I taught my grandkids to sew. First RELAX ! Then, get a cheap, thriftstore sheet, solid color, (easier to see stitches) and cut pieces to practice on. Cut straight, inside and outside curves, using double layers, just as for a garment. Practice seaming and also different stitch settings. When you start a project, choose a simple one, and use easy to sew fabric. NO SATIN ! Remember, straight seams are important, but absolute perfection is usually not . You can do it ! Should you make mistakes, just try again. Nobody is watching or grading you.

Pauline Larson Thanks for being such an encouragement and giving great advice. I tend to get intimidated by all this and realize I won't gain confidence until I do it. So far, so good. I took a sewing class today that came free with the purchase of my sewing machine. I've read the instruction manual thoroughly, watched the DVD, threaded the machine, went through cleaning/maintenance procedures and watched a good number of videos on KZbin and a good beginner series from Amy Allen on Pinterest. The ladies who taught the class told me not to worry; I will be able to sew straight lines without much difficulty (as well as curves). I will head to my thrift store around me as soon as possible and I'll make a point of working on double layers. And I learned in class that there's practice sheets available for free that give me patterns to follow at so-sew-easy.com/sewing-machine-practice-sheets/ I will start with tulle LOL (just kidding). Yeah, I'll stay away from satin for now. Sounds like the kind of material that will get bitten by the feed dogs (though there's a plate in the notions that covers the feed dogs. Even if it doesn't get affected by the feed dogs I agree I wouldn't want to start with that. I'm starting on PJ pants with inexpensive fabric (I think it may be a cotton, polyester fabric that does not stretch.) I can't wait to get through that project. I like the fabric but not much. If things go well then I can work with fabric patterns that really excite me. (I'm a huge Smurf fan and found some Smurfette pattern fabric today...but, again, that will hold until I prove I can make a good pair of PJ pants.)

find your guide and keep your fabric on your guide. Do not look at the needle. That helps. Looking at the needle will make you go crooked every time.

I have knots under my fabric and skipped stitches, why. Rethreaded. Do you think it may be due to two different brands thread types in bobbin and top thread? Only thing I can think of. Help.
