I just want to say that this method of removing the tint works very well for me. I watched a few videos on youtube and this one seemed the easiest. What I did to remove my 10 year old rear window limo tint 1st I sprayed the back window with just normal water from a spray bottle. 2nd turn on rear window defrost for 10-20 mins 3rd used the steamer and a razer to slowly remove tint and glue…it came off in one piece thats it.

Mine was $280 fix it ticket. If I remove it before a certain date and pay the $25 "administrative fee" for the inspection, the citation goes away and I'm assuming doesn't affect my insurance. All super frustrating because the dealer I bought the car from didn't ever inform me that the car was not street legal. (I'm a female first time car owner in my defense.)

Kevin Dean I've seen it cost as low as $25-50 per window to have tint removed and if you only needed tint removed from one window then sure pay someone. But for an entire car it can cost $100 or so just to have it removed depending on whose removing it. So spend $100 or spend $35 and do it yourself?

Thanks for the 'Top Tip'. It worked great. The small amounts of adhesive left behind came off very easily using the steamer and a razor blade. The steam makes the glue very, very soft so the blade can peel it off. I like this method because no harsh chemicals are needed and there's no danger of damaging the door panel (or your lungs).

It worked !!! Got a 1100 watt steamer, just kept filling it up with water. Returning it to store tomorrow lpl. Prolly took 45 min for both windows. Big windows on toyota tundra truck. When it was off only a little bit of glue was left, so just hit it with the steam again and the glue scraped off easily with a razor blade. Thank u so much!! Now i wont be afraid of getting pulled over for almost illegal window tint!!!

Outstanding idea. I bought a used Conair fabric steamer on craigslist for $10.00 and the entire process worked like a champ. I had horrific visions of the tint coming off in sticky little pieces if I would have done it with a razor. Instead, I did all seven windows in my PT Cruiser in 90 minutes, with virtually no adhesive residue to clean up. I must admit that I was amazed at how fast and easy it was. I'm selling the steamer on craigslist, after one day of use, for $15.00 so I'll end up making some money off the deal. Thank you cbutters for saving me the $200.00 to have it done professionally. ​@Bernard Poindexter literally no one uses that measurement. VLT is a measurement of light transmitted, so 80% means it transmits 80% of light. Likewise, 15% transmits only 15% of visible light.

For those that unfortunately have residue left on your windows; mind did. I used carburetor-cleaner spray on the glue and it came off in seconds. Take it easy on what surfaces you spray it and where you let it run to, it's powerful cleaner.

I used 3M 6040 adhesive remover, a little more costly than carb cleaner but knowing how messy and incompetent I am with spray cans I didn't want to risk getting carb cleaner on the plastic surfaces.

I went earlier today to get a quote to get it removed and retinted. One place said $360, the other said $250. Tried this today, worked perfectly!! Glue and everything came off, just don't rush it, be patient and keep the steam on it. Once you get it started it's really easy. I have no idea why ANYONE would bother with the whole windex/garbage bag method, this was a piece of cake!

Thanks for sharing this tip. It saved me $130 that was quoted by several shops to remove the tint on my 2007 Honda Civic. One tip for Civic owners that I wanted to share was how to get the tint off of the tiny windows in the front by the mirrors since it is such a small area. All I did was steam the outside of the window and it came right off without any problems. When you do this you will have to hold the steamer against the window for a bit longer than doing it on the inside. Thanks again!

A hair dryer should work equally well, i don't believe the steam does anything. The film is waterproof, steam isn't doing anything. It's all about the heat.

This Video was a Great help. My wife and I thought the Tint may be removed with either a glue gun remover or with our floor steamer. I decided for the steamer but before hand searched KZbin for corroboration and instructions since I wanted to remove the tint off my Sharp 2001, Mercedes Benz 230 SLK. The process was faster than expected and completely removed the Tint with No damage, No mess, No expenditure. Thanks for the video.

Has anybody successfully done this on a car that's not 2 decades old though? I've got terrible 35% tint all around and I need to remove it to put darker tint in it's place but my car is a 2012. Looks like everyone here has only tried it on cars with windows that have been tinted for 15+ years.

Angel Valenzuela You might be right... I heard that car tint on 2012 models is so incredibly space age and new, the industry has totally changed during that year. Car tint is evolving incredibly fast, and especially the year 2012 is made of completely different compounds than a car even one single year prior. Also a car that is 2012 is so cool that the heat from the steamer can't even touch it.

Best method found online! It removed the adhesive, so a quick glass cleaning was all that was neecessary. To prevent door panels from getting wet, I taped a plastic garbage bag to the panels with painters tape. Worked like a charm and would highly recommend this method above others...saved me $50 at a shop.

Just wanted to thank you for this video. Used a $25 fabric steamer today and had tint that was over 10 years old off all windows in less then two hours (including cleaning windows after). A few spots I had a little bit of adhesive left on the window after the tint film was removed, but a little dab of goof off took care of that. Once again thanks. Absolutely the fastest and easiest way to remove tint from windows. I have removed before using water and scraper technique. I just bought a steamer for $19.88 at Walmart and it took me 25 minutes to do all four car windows on my husband's car which included the small window vents on the rear doors. Thank you. Thanks for posting this video. I had a door replaced with a recycled door and they forgot to put my window back in. The window on the replacement door had tint on it. I really didn't want them pulling my door panel off again, they already screwed up so many other things,and when I found this, I was psyched. It worked great. Already had the steamer too. You are a genius! My situation was weird the previous owner of my home put cheap tint on our paned glass windows & it was turning purple. I started by scraping with a razor on one pane & after 40 minutes & hand cramps. I knew this was stupid. Your advice rocked, I had all 16 done in 2 hours. Instead of a steamer I used my iron which has an upright steam feature & this worked great. One warning , if non-tempered glass make sure you do this in warm weather or you will get cracked glass.

thank you for saving me $$ with your "here's how" method. just done removing the tint from my driver side window using your method and the film came off as easily as you said, but still got about 95% of the glue residue on the window. I guess the glue on my window was stronger. I still think your method is easy and efficient. I used nail polish remover (NPR) to remover 100% of the glue residue on the window! it worked! don't get discouraged like i did when it seemed not to do anything the first time after a few scrubbing. My son learned that holding the rag soaked with NPR on the glue residue for at least 30 second to 1 minute allowed NPR to disintegrate the glue residue and making removing it as simple as wiping it off the widow! I'm still amazed by how easy it was to remove the film using your technique and the glue residue with NPR! Happy Thanksgiving!!

Bought a fabric steam cleaner today and it worked! Did exactly what he said in the video, except my tint was REALLY old and after taking off the actual tint with the steam cleaner, it left the adhesive so I just used some Windex & paper towels and it came right off

This method makes perfect sense. With steam, the water vapor is going right through the film and glue layer. The trapped water vapor between the glass and tinting helps to take it all off nicely, unlike using just heat from a heat gun.

wow i can't believe this method worked! I have used a heat gun on my other car to remove some old tint and that went horribly wrong so i had to end up taking it to a professional who was able to take off the glue and tint off. I just want to say that the steamer method is the best method. My advise is to heat up the window with the steamer then with the blade start at a corner if you can and SLOWLY start pealing it off. On my first try i did the drivers side window and i tried doing it fast like the guy in the video and some layers of the tint pealed off which took me a little longer to remove the whole tint film but no residue was left on the window. On the passenger side it was a breeze! i took the whole tint film off in one big piece, but this time i took it slow so patience is key. good luck.

got a fix it ticket for our Suburban for front windows. And use the steamer to remove the tint. Took about 15 minutes per window. I just used our clothes steam we had already from Bed Bath and Beyond. Tip: if you get any residue left on your window from the tint. Use a micro fiber cloth and the steamer to heat up the goo and then use the micro fiber cloth to wipe it off. Just keep repeating until it comes off. If the goo part is kinda think or a lot, let the steam condensate and get a bit wet, then you know its hot, and wipe it off. Side notes: the tint on our windows is about 2 years old and was what looked like a double layer. Good Luck. PS thanks for the video!

My experience wasn't quite so easy, but I think that had more to do with the fact that the tint has been on much much much longer than 9 years and I was trying to do it in the winter so it cooled faster. thanks for the vid! i bought the same steamer. Had the tint off two Monte Carlo LS windows in a matter of 20 minz. The glue was another issue. Not terrible. The steamer helped loosen the glue. Nothing a razor blade couldn't handle. Thanks again for the video :)

Excellent!!! Worked just the way he showed in the video Just a little glue spots. Steamer removes left over glue as well. Just steam area where glue is and then wipe with a towel or wash cloth. I paid 29.99 for my steamer at Target. Walmart was all out.

I just successfully removed the tint from my 2012 vehicle! It was super easy. Thanks for the demo! I barely had any glue left on the window but I used the steamer to get the last gooey bits up too. I can finally see out my windows! The steamer I got just for this project had a small reservoir so I kept a big water bottle handy to refill.

I just took off side window tint with my hand held steamer and it only took less than 10 minutes a window. left very little glue residue that I just removed with 90% isopropyl alcohol, and then used glass cleaner to clean the windows. Worked like a charm!

I have 19 year old tint on my rear window that I needed to remove. I tried heat gun first, I do not recommend it....it just dried up the tint and melted it and was not easy to remove. I then tried the steamer as in this video and it worked like a CHARM! I would recommend steamer any day, so easy to remove with it! Thanks CbuttersTech

Had to say this works great. I watched a few parts of the video and got the basic how to down and went for it. Less than 10 minutes later I had all ting off. There was some residue left behind but that took about 5 minutes each window to get off. Need a steamer anyway and that was cheaper than what the tint shop quoted. Great video.

Worked great with a clothing steamer. Pulled off in seconds. Used denatured alcohol to clean the glue off, and it cleaned the glass at the same time. Plan on using plenty of paper towels though. Thanks for the video.

IT WORKED THANK YOU (REASON FOR CAPS IS BECAUSE I WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW THIS) AFTER THIS IS DONE, YOU WILL NEED TO GET RID OF THE STICKY PART, USE PETROL FOR THIS PART. Please be sure to use petrol, otherwise the sticky will never come off. Thanks again mate, if I didn't see this video, I would've left my windows they way I brought the car, bubbles all over, very dangerous, always had to keep my drivers window down to see beside me.

ha thanks a bunch dude you saved me $40 on removing my driver and passenger windows limo tint didnt have a steamer or a iron that sprayed steam so i used a hair blow dryer and did the job perfectly :D I recommend everyone use a blow dryer works like a charm im only 16 years old and i managed

couldnt find that one for $25 at walmart, its more like $49 so i went to ross and found it for $29. i just did the front wiondow and it worked! not as easy though as mine is really old and more brittle but it took only 15 minutes! i cant believe it worked. GET THAT PURPLE TINT OFF! thanks bro

For anybody claiming that this doesn't work - can just drive right over to the tint shop and hand over their wallet. Thank you to cbutters Tech for uploading this video and saving us our hard earned $$$$. The process took about less than 10 minutes for both of my front windows. Heat it enough, attempt to peel it.. if theres hesitation - heat it some more (don't go crazy with it though). In the beginning I didn't heat it enough and peeled fast (that left a fist size of glue residue). Corrected my tiny mistake with goof off for the small amount of residue that was left over.. or you could heat and scrub with a towel (repeat until gone).

THANKS very much, i just bought a 2002 ford mustang gt and the previous owners put a VERY deep purple tint on the rear window, and at night its a PAIN to see anything, but with this method, i got it done in 10 minutes.

Okay, so I tried the steam cleaner approach, but my cleaner didn't do the trick. Soooo, I tried my blow dryer on the highest heat setting and it worked like a charm! Thanks for the help, what I have been putting off for a year only took me about 45 minutes or so. Best of all, it was free!
