Fe (cn)6 has 6 ligands then it should be called hexahedral mam .then why it is said to be octahedral
@SDChemistry4 жыл бұрын
6 ligands are at 6 corners. 4 on the same plane ,1 above the plane and 1 below the plane. Imagine. When u connect all these, you will get a crystal structure which has 8 faces. 8 is octa...hence octahedral.

Ok... coordination no is the no of donor atoms of the ligand coordinated to the central metal atom. So 6 is the coordination no.
@lakshmibaskar46673 жыл бұрын
Sorry for disturbing again Mam... I am confusing and I couldn’t understand why the coordination number is 12. The coordination number and geometry of cerium in [Ce(NO3)6]2- are respectively: a)6 and octahedron b)6 and trigonal prism c)8 and cubic d)12 and icosahedron Correct answer is option 'D'. Cerium being a large atom of lathanide series accommodate No3-- as a bidentate ligand ( No3-- is a flexidentate ligand) , hence coordination number become 12 and has a icosahedron structure
