The hybridization of [NiCl4]2- is sp3 This is because chlorine is a weak field ligand and does not cause the pairing of electrons in the d orbitals of nickel. Therefore, the 4s and 4p orbitals of nickel are used to accept the electron pairs from chlorine. The shape of the complex is tetrahedral. Strong field ligands are - CN- ,CO ,en, NH3 , NO+ ,Py. Week field ligands are- I-,Br-, Cl- ,NO3- ,OH- ,oxalato2- ,H20.
