Thank you so much for this. This is our second year doing CC, and my first year tutoring. Last year, the prospect of possibly tutoring this year seemed daunting, but your videos have been great resources for me. I feel like you provide such helpful signs and suggestions, while also reminding us not to stess too much and to have fun.

Thanks, Stephanie! You're a life saver. :-) One thing that might be interesting for older students - the speed of air flow on the tin whistle is how you control the octave, so you can potentially hit every note in two octaves.

Remember to print out the errata sheets because there are a quite a few mistakes in this section! This video lists the order of dynamics correctly (towards the end) but they are in the wrong order in the guide)

great video, about the connection of the word piano with dynamics. It was actually the word for soft long before the piano was invented. The harpsichord which the piano has basically eclipsed, was played by pressing keys down that would cause strings in the back to be plucked. Because they were plucked, there was very little control of dynamics. if you pluck slowly you get muffled sound or no sound. but not a quiet sound. the piano on the otherhand, uses little hammers that strike the keys. So when it was invented, they called in a forte-piano, to emphasize the fact that it couldnplay loud AND soft. eventually it was shorted to piano. :)

yes...also the words are Italian rather than Latin. I'm sure the root words were from latin originally, but piano and forte are not Latin. :) not super important in the end, but for anyone helping master classes.. :)

Totally agree with having a place for the whistle when not in use... I used a paper towel on the table.

Stephanie, thank you so much for this! Tin whistle is my weakness, but I'm trying to better educate myself. I think this 5th edition is much more accessible for novices like me! Can you tell me about your art book? This year we've started keeping a science notebook where we draw all our science experiments, and I am curious if we could extend this to the fine art section as well. At the least, I could fold staple 3 pages together to create a tin whistle book to send home at the end of the quarter.

It really is much easier! Our campus does an art book. Tutors collect all art through the year and its put in a folder, add a little front page scrapbooking....then we present it to them at the end of the year
