When installing lowering springs, coilovers, or any other product that lowers the car, the conventional wisdom is that you should wait and drive the car around for a while for the car to completely "settle." In reality, the springs won't, or should not, change height over time. The car will need to be rolled to neutralize the tire position before the height of the car can me measured, but this has nothing to do with the springs! It happens every single time the car is lifted off the ground.

I no doubt would buy quality springs & I'm strongly considering lowering my car but my question is what are the chances of doing damage underneath the car if it bottoms out. I'm here on the east coast where we have a lot of pot holes & just bad roads in general, & how harsh is the ride

Great question! Honestly, with reasonable lowering (1-2" drop) the odds of damaging something is really rather low. There is more clearance under there than you think. Now, lowering the car more on stock dampers does carry risk, which over rough roads that work the suspension more it can bottom out the dampers more and cause extra wear and tear meaning needing new shocks prematurely. Many folks are after lower and lower and lower heights, but once you get past an inch or so you really need to consider coilovers in stead of just springs.
