The ability to measure using a 3D scan to the accuracy that CCAT is doing is incredible. Add to that the ability to do a CT Scan is mind boggling. Consider using this equipment to measure and align precision machinery such as; lathes, milling machines, precision grinding machines, etc. In the early 2000s we experimented with the measurement of 150 ton units for a ship being built. The idea being to measure adjacent units to see they would fit together. The tolerance we were shooting for was t/3, or 1/3 the thickness of the material. If I understand correctly, they can measure to 0.0001". Starting in the 1980s commercial ships were required to be able to lock their rudders should the steering gear be disabled. During a drydocking of one our ships had the steering gear brake engaged. Unbeknownst to the outside machinists, the rudder was pulled hard over using a crane. Considerable damage was done to the rudder stock, requiring clad welding and machining. The CT Scan would have been invaluable in determining if the clad welding was good and the rudder stock was sound.

Wow! I love it! Meteorology on steroids! Peering inside of stuff non destructively! It doesn't get any better than this! Thanks Ian! The next step is to have all of our machines, flashlights, cars, etc., self powered by harnessing either atmospheric energies or by generating aetheric energies onboard. Energy production in these ways is well known by some and they're very proven methodologies. This is the next step that is currently missing and needs to be implemented as soon as practical. :)

It is insane to me that you can NDT parts on the fly, instead of destructive-testing a random sampling - it really raises the quality bar!

This is great! If a smaller shop wants to get in the aerospace and medical arena they can possibly get in a little easier with this type of tech. I know its expensive but not as expensive as 3 or 4 really expensive Doosans. 😅

This was my thought as well! The ability to do on the fly inspection with tech like this is a huge game changer, in my opinion. Thanks for checking it out!

Thx Arnold 🤘🏼 Nasir & our team do some SW development, eg M3DI.co, to create low-cost solutions for small/med manufacturers. Now, we're particularly focused on AI/ML for model-based manufacturing / production to incorporate adaptive control during additive, subtractive &/or hybrid mfg.

You're thumbnail is a complete lie. 3d Scanning a part is only 5-10% of the steps required to reverse engineer a part which takes many hours to produce a useable cad file. No where in video was anything about reverse engineering covered. This was all about inspection and a little bit about automated process using a 3d Scanner. Cool video none the less, but your thumbnail is a lie.

That was my thought as well, Richard. A 3D scan file is merely a starting point to rebuild an actual CAD file if the ultimate intent is to reverse engineer a component in the true sense. It still takes a lot of CAD work to attempt to recapture the original design intent. The thing about using it for dimensional inspection is that you still need a true CAD file to start with to compare the scanned file to.
