M&R engineering is looking to double in size. How will they pull it off? President and Owner Natalia Sephton says through automation. M&R Engineering has a wide range of capabilities for primarily aerospace and government work.
In this tour we’re talking screw machines with no computers, cobot (collaborative robot) milling machine assistants, Swiss machining, and apprenticeship programs. And of course, precision parts don’t come without a strong quality department. M&R has built a workforce of 67 employees and is women owned. Take a look inside!
In this video you’ll meet:
Oscar who is utilizing a robot for milling applications. “It isn't too difficult to get into, it seems kind of scary but once you begin, it's very simple."
Chris the CNC foreman who is dedicated to teaching and skilling up individuals. He is also a screw machining master.
Andreas who came through their apprenticeship program and is now a Swiss operator.

I have a soft spot for swiss machines. Best money printers on the market if you can get the contracts to feed them.

Thanks for the great tour Ian, I was thinking that if you had a laser pointer, it could help in highlighting some of the internals of the machines to a non machinist like me..... & Great to see a female owner running what is normally a male dominated field :-)

@@iansandusky417 You have a great interviewer style & you allow your interviewees to shine - also it's great to see people doing usefull stuff in the spotlight, instead of the spotlight being on useless people doing useless stuff eg Politicians aka Bankers canines 😎

I like the concept of a universal robot acting as a cobot. It's been over 30 years since I worked in a machine shop, so I've been away for a while and it's the first time I have seen such a setup. It really adds value to the production process, keeping a conventional cnc lathe running at maximum productivity. As always: interesting stuff Ian!

It’s a pretty cool concept - I think we’re going to be seeing a LOT more of these in the near future as they become easier to adopt and implement. Thank you very much for checking it out!

Amazing Ian , showing young generation in the progress is just great ! Every company should support the younger generation as possible as they can.

ITAR is a registration (not a certification) with the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. It shouldn't be feared, and it usually isn't as in depth or costly as say ISO certification/registration. If you are a basic US company and your company is a wholly owned and wholly based in the US, you are basically declaring that your company isn't the controlled by a foreign entity. Once your application is filled and filed, you simply submit a request for a permanent export license (DSP-5) for any article that is on the ITAR list. The DDTC approves or denies, but now has a record of any article that leaves the US. If your companies ownership or your citizenship is something other than US, I'm sure it gets a bit more tedious, but it doesn't automatically disqualify.

In Canada we have CGP (controlled goods program) which is basically the same thing

I am currently setup with SAMS & DIBBS, but they have sent a couple of notices about not having a SSP (system security plan). If I was registered with ITAR would that cover the SSP? Also we are small operation.

Very nice video, guys! A detailed and clear illustration of how a robot can significantly speed up the process of machine tending! By the way, what`s the brand name of the cobot in video?

Robot opening the door, like a operator is not a good idea. for door, we have put pnematic cylinder, while robot reached the target position(near the door) door will be automatically open.

ITAR has nothing to do with tolerances. You could write software and sell it to a foreign nation and violate ITAR.

Neat. I’m Canadian and we don’t have ITAR, hence the confusion.

They shouldn’t lie to people saying the robot is a assistant. we all know that’s the excuse companies use to find a way to eliminate jobs while increasing profit..

If you run a cell, it is an assistant. Production is production. We use robots to eliminate human error. Robots still need people to program/teach them. Still have to fix robots. People still have to set up CNC machines. There just won’t be as many dummy button pushing jobs anymore. People need to learn to increase their skill set and move with the times. Like anything else, don’t get left behind
