omg! i used to have this on a video cassette tape with a bunch of other old cartoons when i was really little! i remember this was my favorite! i went off of mamas little baby loves short nin short nin, mamas little baby loves short nin bread to find it! i remember this! oh gosh those were good times!

There were similar cartoons with this story/theme...One involving candy people and the other involving fruits & vegetables... The songs are Ain't She Sweet and Yes We have No Bananas.

IN-FUCKIN'-CREDIBLE. I'm a 65 yr. old Black man raised in the American South with this song AND this cartoon. I remember them from my childhood. To see them now makes me say we've come soooooo far, bless America's heart. But with Donald Trump & his minions? American still has SUCH a way to go. God help her on our journey!

It's been 50 yrs since I've seen these shorts in theaters. I don't know why some of them can't bring them back. I think people would get a kick out of them. Of course this song couldn't possibly be shown. (Too racist) OK everyone, follow the bouncing ball.

Shortnin' Bread is a bit shorter than the other Screen Songs. Have all the extant versions perhaps been edited for content? I was wondering - were the "mammy" and "chillun" always white, or has this been altered from the original?

Yes, the "mammy" and "chillun" were always white. It was never in any way altered. The only Screen Song to my knowledge that was ever "tampered" was the one called "MacNamara's Band". Sung in the cartoon, "The Emerald Isle", the song was originally aired in its entirety during the early 1960s, then in the mid 60s for some reason the song was removed from the cartoon entirely with no explanation.

He's not dead, it is revealed later that his eyes had been shut like he'd been dead. Listen to the rest of the song and you would know this.

"Shortnin' Bread" is a folk song from the 1800s created by the black community. So I don't see it as racist. Unless you're saying black people were racist towards themselves?
