Hello Charles, great explanation, quick question though, I will investigate myself too, but why would you want to use a Jumbo, Baby Jumbo, and Super Jumbo frames? L2 and L3 what will be a justification to use them. Thank you and very useful!
@CharlesJudd4 жыл бұрын
A good example of where you might see jumbo frames in use is within a Storage Area Network (SAN). Many storage vendors recommend larger frames in order to increase performance, although it seems the consensus opinion is that the gains are very marginal. In most circumstances, since our modern NICs and CPUs are much better at handling the overhead of extra frames, jumbo frames don't provide enough of a performance boost to outweigh the potential issues - those issues being more network complexity, more complicated configuration, and more difficulty troubleshooting MTU issues.
@ahmadnawaz81233 жыл бұрын
These terminologies are also used in mpls network in my personal experience it works, sometime web application are not loaded and it's countinously loading the page but once we set the MTU for that particular segment web page uploaded. Jumpboo frame are common to deploy some vendors. In other ways youre enhancing the frame capacity to outflow on the device. Thanks

Great videos, can you tell us how you set up your labs? Are they physical or virtual?
@CharlesJudd4 жыл бұрын
I have a Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) license, so I will be labbing on that platform. I've been a user since VIRL 1.0, and I very much enjoy the simplicity. I'm planning to make a future video detailing this a bit more. Thanks for checking out my channel!

so when is it necessary to configure the mtu size on an interface?
@CharlesJudd4 жыл бұрын
A common reason for doing this would be to increase the throughput on high speed interfaces. For example, when connecting two switches together using 10 gig interfaces, these interfaces would support up to 9000 MTU. There are also cases where storage vendors recommend increased MTU for best performance. VMware suggests that jumbo frame usage with their vSAN storage virtualization can lower CPU usage and increase throughput. As for the actual performance gains achieved, there's lots of debate about that. It really depends on the individual network design and the implementation. In many cases, the gain is so slight that it doesn't justify the potential issues.
