I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 ( My mom had to sign a waiver for me), I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang, by the DMZ. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. There were many Vietnam songs back then that I just loved by CCR, this song is one of them, I still listen to them every now and then. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten.

My uncle just passed away from being exposed to agent orange from when he was in Vietnam! I was in the Marines (0331) I did two tours in Iraq and I can tell you this. World War 1, 2, Korea, and Vietnam these were men!! Not only did the Drill Instructors, and Drill Sergeants beat the hell out of these guys. There training and the Wars they fought in was bad!!! While i agree that CCR is the band of the Vietnam war, it is important to note that the band was not pro war, very class conscious, and against the exploitation of our troops dying needlessly in war Vietnam didn't deserve to be part of, and our troops should have never been sent. Both sides died needlessly in an attempt for what? US imperialism. What is worse, is they didn't even accomplish the goal, as it was damn near impossible given the conditions of jungle warfare in a foreign country. Many of our vets came home and lived in poverty, had ptsd, and became homeless. That was their reward for a sacrifice many of them didn't want to participate in, hence the damn draft which forced them.

I can remember as a little girl, that when my brother was drafted into the Vietnam War, my father told the Army: "You can't have him. 2 of my boys in Vietnam is enough". 2 of my brothers were already over there and we're not even Americans. WE'RE AUSTRALIANS. I think the USA too easily forgets the sacrifices made by its allies in the Vietnam war. Over 500 of my countrymen, died there. Many were wounded. Many more came home with what would turn out to be cancer caused by Agent Orange. My brother came home then was taken almost immediately to the army hospital in Sydney with severe malaria. After a couple of weeks the hospital rang my mother and told her not to expect him to be coming home. Thousands still today suffer with PTSD. Let alone the suicides. While our soldiers were out on patrol they would be saturated by Agent Orange as it was sprayed on the jungles they were walking through. 2 years ago my brother Ian died after a long and painful battle to breathe and move, as a result of a chest cancer typical of the type caused by Agent Orange. That war didn't just steal the lives and sanity of Americans. It stole the brothers I remembered from me. Inevitably they were different when they eventually came home, but being the youngest sister I didn't understand. As I grew up I realised more the incredible stress and fear my family lived with as a result of Vietnam. It stole my childhood. Even now, all these years later I still flinch at the sound of helicopters on TV and in movies, and going overhead. I go straight back to the late 60s and early 70s, watching the ABC Australia News on our black and white TV and seeing men like my brothers running hard to get to rescue choppers in long battered grass. I spent a good part of my childhood writing letters to my brothers on super-thin airmail writing pads, and making biscuits (cookies) for them, making sure I got the recipes right (Edward liked more walnuts, Ian liked more dried currants). I remember my mother getting annoyed with me because I didn't pack the little treacle tin full of biscuits right. She said they were too loose and they would get broken. It wasn't until many years later I realised that it wasn't so much that she was annoyed with me, but in her mind she was seeing the little tin, wrapped over and over with thick brown paper and tied tightly with string, crashing to the ground, in some God forsaken grassy field along with mail and parcels from all the other families waiting and praying and living in fear that they would never see their brothers and sons and fathers again. And for what?
@williamsherman1942 Жыл бұрын
Ain’t war hell? And yeah you’re right, many Americans have a centralized view of history and it’s mostly due to how the American education system runs. Americans who have served know the sacrifices and acts by our allies, but casual civvies don’t understand or learned about it

6 uncle's and my father served in Vietnam, lost my dad and two uncles, those that survived came back changed. Two of my uncle's pretty much adopted me and I seen something they would never show others, both taught me so much camping and hunting they learned in Vietnam. Marines was my choice and no one really wanted me to go, all the drill instructor's in 78 were Vietnam vets that taught us, all said I owe my life to the ones who served in Vietnam because the 21 year's I served was by the unselfish education those vet's gave me.

(he was in his mid-sixties) Thirty years later I drove down there in 2002 and was shocked to see nothing left of my barracks, the movie theater and the PX diner we used to frequent. I think the tornado that devastated Huntsville leveled much of it. The Quonset huts where I stayed when I took AIT were all gone too, with just their cement slabs left. I felt like a part of me was erased. One thing that was noteworthy was how thoroughly the MPs searched my car because 9/11 was the year before.

The second one he did because he had two younger brothers he was afraid if they were drafted in the second draft they would not come back alive and he did not want his mother to go through that. He told me he knew he would make it back a second time! And he did. He had PTSD Pretty bad when he came home but I learned how to deal with it and when he had one of those spells how to get him out of it. He is still alive and Kickin today! My Dad never talked of this war or what he saw......he played this song alot and I'm pretty sure it summed it up enough for what I needed to know. Thank you all who served and sacrificed.

PTSD is a horrible thing. My Husband had it bad! Thank You Uncle Fred for you service! Heres a little secret they don't want you to know, PTSD triggers early onset of rapid moving, aggressive Dementia! Affects the same section of the brain. Theres another one, SDS, Sudden Death syndrome, you just drop dead, boom. Directly related to Agent Orange. My Husband had both!

My Bro-in-law, Danny was a M-60 door gunner on an Bell UH-1 Huey. He wasted many people. He recently has had health problems and his left leg was amputated. When he stands before the lord we pray that he is forgiven for all he has done for our country. 🇺🇸
