See how to set a Hi Rail Truck on track. This is the first time
this brand new truck has ever been on the rails. We gonna load some
bridge approach timbers on the truck before we set it on track.
Bridge approach timbers are 10 feet in length. There are typically
4 to 5 of those long timbers just before and just after the bridge
before the regular ties are started. That longer length helps hold
track surface up to the bridge grade because as they are longer you
can tamp more ballast under the ends of the timbers.
Link to watch the video on the 7 1/2 inches of the rail head blew
out in that crossing is here:
• This is Really Ugly! ...
Later in the video we'll show you how to set up 2 rails so they
can be Thermite Welded. Here's a link to watch a video on a
Thermite Weld they did in a different location:
• Shooting a Thermite We...
Some folks spell them as hyrail in fact the rail gear inspection sticker on
this truck refers to it as a hyrail. The Code of Federal regulations
refers to them as Hi Rail, either spelling would be acceptable. Hi Rail means
the truck is capable of going from high way to rail. Rail gear inspection for
these trucks are required annually by a private inspector. In other
words a company such as Frontier or Hulcher is not allowed to
inspect their own trucks for the rail gear, but they are allowed to
perform a DOT state inspection for high way use as long as that
company has a state certified DOT inspector.

Grapple trucks are great most flexible hi rail equipment you have. Carries rail , ties , and I saw the magnet for OTM. On the early truck they where so high on the rails it was a real chore climbing in them or getting out. Management didn’t realize how high they they where off the ground. Try getting in one on a sloped embankment with snow lol.

Oh you are so right David, these trucks are real workhorses. Hulcher here has a grapple truck where the first step folds down so that avoids the high step you are mentioning. Very much appreciate your writing in and for taking in the video my friend.

Before he came to Frontier, he was a trucker that hauled a lot of railroad equipment and he usually got stuck hauling the tampers around, so he knows what he's doing. Great, great guy to be around and always tries his very best to do a good job for us. Will have a video out later in summer or fall where I interview Lucky as were are driving down the track in this truck. Thanks so much for taking in tonight's presentation my friend.

Nothing like new equipment. Holes in the grapple and stashed in between a Moley magnet. Holy Moley! The maiden trip for it launched on uneven ballast but not off to a rocky start (sic) An expensive but worthwhile investment for both the equipment company and their customers. @@ccrx6700 18 years old, as one could tell it's just broke in, but at least it's not broken. Alot of the Railroads in the 70's & 80's wound up with those Grumman inspection trucks with their big box cabs. Rode hard, electrical nightmares, froze your butt off in the winter. Alot of short lines had these trucks for years as MOW Equipment well into 2000. Still to this day, you can find these old girls tucked away at a few tourist Railroad Museums. I hope you get a new one soon, but I think that the Railroad will get newer engines before your wish would be granted. Come to the show in August my friend. You said that the mine owns 150 feet either side of the track. That is plenty of space to add a second track and an access road along the tracks I know you said it would be a million dollars a mile, but I really think putting it in an connecting the track to CSX with a new yard would increase the number of trains you could pull each day. With more trains you can sell to other power plants. Having 2 sidings where you could bring 4 trains and couple them into 160 car long trains for CSX to come and pull with 5 or 6 locomotives and drop off the empties, you could constantly be bringing new loaded trains and bringing back empties 24 hours a day.
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 2 жыл бұрын
An interchange would be awesome, but then we would also fall under FRA inspections. Also what you don't know is that several years ago they spent a ton of money to build a barge unloading facility at LaBelle where they are able to load CSX trains from. So with that now in place there will be no future rail interchange here. One factor in that was the inability for certain land owners willingness to sell a right of way to the mine. Our mine wanted to belt coal over to Waynesburg at our sister mine emerald where they do have a siding off NS trackage. But several land owners would not sell so that idea fell thru also, that is why LaBelle came into existence.
