We don't want to get ran over by the train. How we prevent serious accidents from happening on the railroad here.
Train and track safety is very important here and everyone involved takes
that safety consciousness seriously. As a result we are a very safe
operation. We have a great company to work for that fully backs and
supports worker safety on the railroad. Great communication that
we have is vital and everyone involved is committed to that happening.
It sure gives me a tremendous sense of relief knowing when I'm on track
I can count on my fellow workers to protect me.
Check out my other You Tube channel with more Railroad related videos along
with other cool stuff, we just got started and your support will be
very much appreciated:

I work on territories with both TWC and CTC, we used to copy and write down the track authorities on each corresponding book, now days we request and get our track authorities via a laptop and the DS sends us a pdf file of our track authorities, but we still do the old fashion way of copying and hand writing the authorities as a backup and for those who doesn’t have a company laptop yet, for us it’s a must to have a hard copy or a pdf file for us to check and make sure we stay within our limits and when we get audited by the FRA and roadmaster on track authorities we have the pdf and hard copy of our authorities for proof of track occupancy.

Another thing I want to point out is a behind on TWC, we can get a behind following a train with only a Box-2 warrant(proceed) and we have to verify with the DS that the lead locomotive of the train I or we are getting a behind warrant(Box-4) is by our point of entry(crossing) before the DS gives us a warrant, then we have to call the train and ask for their head end location(milepost) then brief with them our intentions then say if they have to stop or make a reverse move to contact us of their intentions before we set any vehicles on.

I've worked industrial maintenance. I used to argue with the suits constantly, as they just couldn't believe that no matter what, machines WILL break. The best you can do is to try to "schedule" the breakage by having the strongest preventative maintenance program you can. The world is an imperfect place and things will break unexpectedly. Usually this fell on deaf ears, and the suits would be back the next week asking why our 20 year old machines we run 24/7 have such terrible down time. I think you guys do an amazing job, especially considering the lean years you've held it together. So glad the new owners are giving you the support you need.

Amen. To make matters more fun you combine a refusal to shut the machines down for basic maintenance with ancient equipment and virtually no stock of spare parts ("Why do we need to order that gizmo? It's running now with to old one in there") or consideration of improvements that only decrease downtime, not increase hourly production rate. Multi-million dollar transfer machine going down daily due to electonics overheating after the cabinet cooler failed 3 years ago, number of drives it's gone through is easy 4x the cost of a new cooler, not including downtime. But the suits say it doesn't need the cooler to run, so here we are.

"We have almost no problems. "It's that "almost" that would have me concerned Dave. "Read back" or "repeat back" communications has the benefit of being simple and IT WORKS. If the guy repeating back gets something confused or wrong you're gonna know it and can stop him and correct him. Military does exactly the same thing because the stakes are just as high. Communications is a fantastic tool. I wish more people would use it. Your "front office" should love those excellent condition reports, fewer problems means less time and money wasted from having to do emergent repairs because when the railroad shuts down it isn't making money.

18 years where I work, we've gone from paper TOPs on mainline and written 40.1 for non-signalled sidings (Dual Power Operated Switch Blocking Confirmation) to Electric/Ditigal TOPs for all ML/Siding work. The newer generation of Foremen have never really had much experience with the paper TOPs, us more seasoned employees are fortunate to have lots of experience for the sole reason that you can never count 100% on cell reception (or servers going down). Thankfully I came into the industry well after working off a line up, have heard some sketchy stories of the motpr car handles getting cleaned off at the last second....

I’m so jealous. Wish there was a way civilians could take a ride on the rail like that. It does look so cool and yet peaceful. As for safety, and maintaining the rails and equipment, I’m sure you know, if you stay on top of things you have less problems. Rotten track leads to rotten wheels, and rotten wheels tear up track. Your outfit seem to have their head on straight and congrats for that :) Thanks again for taking the trouble to do these vids. They always put a smile on my face :)

On the KLS&C, we self dispatched and time table. If either the scenic or dinner train were out, they ran on time table schedule. Freight and maintenance trains ran as extras and knew the schedules for scenic and dinner and meets were prearranged if needed. Radio comm could be used to amend if needed most of the time. We never had any problems. I had a couple of freight runs where meets were amended. I used to radio on one. Due to the short range, if negative contact I knew I had clear rail for a mile or a mile and a half. Ever few minutes I made another call. We got to the siding in plenty of time for a smooth meet. A touch of risk, but well mitigated by communication or lack of as if the other train heard my call, they would answer. Communications is critical even on a model railroad for any train running. Cornfield meets even in scale can damage equipment! That can hurt feelings when that happens. Congratulations on the excellent inspections. If the KLS&C had ever been inspected, we wouldn't have come close to that!
