Dave, the W&W crew is so very lucky that you joined our ranks. We would never have been able to complete the project before Harvest Festival without your help. Think about doing this type of track work with hand tools only day after day in all weather for six years! Incredible ! Good going Dave and the crew! 👍🚂

I would not normally describe railtrack as being beautiful but what else can the people say but that this railtrack is beautiful! It is such an appropriate piece of track to display this excellent locomotive on. Everything that this historical society has done is to such a high standard and this locomotive and the track on which it will rest confirms all that has been done. The community will hold all that has been done here in very high esteem and will ensure that anyone who visits will take away very fond memories with them. I don't know how you find time to do this excellent work. It gives me a perspective on the original railroads going across the country and what obstacles and day to day work they faced. It's too bad Quadrill doesn't make a narrow gauge machine - you could drill and set lag screws on every tie plate with ease - of course it wouldn't be authentic - so, never mind :) No matter the task you have a great crew of volunteers there! Instead of sitting at home quietly, they are with you busting butt on a narrow gauge railroad! My hat is off to all of you folks!

What are their plans with the locomotive? If they have an operational Plymouth switcher around, it seems they must have a decent bit of line to run passenger excursions and added an inspection pit in the shop, are they planning on a potential overhaul and bringing it back into service?
@ccrx67002 жыл бұрын
Right now only 400 feet of track. We are seeking grant money to extend the track and get her back under steam, so wish us luck! Appreciate your writing in and for watching Patrick.

#ccrx 6700 do you add a 1/4 inch. to the track gauge? That was how I was told to do it what I worked for a short line to keep the rail and wheel wear down.
@ccrx67003 жыл бұрын
Very good question Mike. Here they wanted to keep it right at 36. I've always been a proponent of gauge widening on sharp degree curves on the Cumberland RR where I work, specially with our 3 axle locomotive trucks. However not anyone there has wanted to agree with me on that one. I think it would cut down on high rail curve wear on the gage face of the rail head and also ease some wear on the car and loco wheels also. We have a lot of curves over 8 degrees, some are up to 12 degrees on main. Seems like it was common practice in the days of steam.

How do you curve the rails for curves like that? Is the rail flexible enough to just put into curve by hand or is there machinery?
@ccrx67003 жыл бұрын
Great question Will and someday will do a full video on that. Some transit rail with really sharp degree curvature is pre bent when rolled. However most all rail for freight is straight and must be curved. To do that: bolt one end of the track together to existing rail, then start bending the rail by hand using lining bars and setting spikes behind to hold it in place. The lining bars or slate bars have pointed ends and we put those in tie plate holes and use that as a pry point to push the rail with the bar. Lessor degree curves 2 guys can do it, but with sharper degree curves it takes 3 or 4 guys on the lining bars.
@willb.3832 жыл бұрын
@@ccrx6700 dang! I thought there might be enough flex in a length of rail but it’s still incredible to hear that. Would love to see that being done. Thanks for the reply!

DAVE ! By any chance is the whistle/horn still on that LOCO ? How hard would it be to run a airline out to it so the kids could "TOOT" the horn ?
@ccrx67003 жыл бұрын
Very good question Captain. They do have the whistle but take it off and store it inside so it doesn't grow legs and walk away, you understand what I mean there. The loco is set up so it can run off compressed air instead of steam and that will hopefully be a near future event to get that going and yes the whistle will blow on compressed air and will be a big hit with the kids and us older kids! @ccrx67003 жыл бұрын
No George we didn't tamp anything, the 2B gravel we used packed in pretty well as it was and because the loco moved so slow over the track there really was not a need to tamp, also this is right now a static display so we don't need to worry bout track shifting. If we do get a dip in track then we will hand jack and tamp with lining bars.
