CD changers: were they ever worth the hassle?

Sheesh, that thing is nasty. Philips did make a lot of CD players with plastic chassis going back to the 1980s but that looks particularly unpleasant. Doesn't even look to be a Philips CDM12 in there as you would expect - got to be some cheap OEM built that.
