It takes persistence. After all, it is a lot more than just finding friendships, and even genuine friendships can be difficult to gain without really putting yourself out there. So don't give up. Of course, it helps to lower your own standards as well, if you aren't good looking, well there are plenty of girls who are about same, or don't care so much if your personality stands out enough that it shines through.

Honestly, I think Misako genuinely liked you. The thing about saying "We're only friends, I'll pay my half" is the type of shit I've done on my crushes in the past and I did it to avoid sounding too straight forward or make the other person uncomfortable. I think she still wanted to pay the other half because it's nice but also didn't wanna seem too straight forward. I think the kiss on the neck might have also been due to embarrassment but I could be wrong. Since she didn't know you too well, she might have been afraid it would make you uncomfortable. Since you guys had difficulty talking because of the language barrier, it might have also made her question whether you liked her or not. I have these thoughts myself when it comes to having crushes. Most of the time, I'm doing nothing wrong but my dumbass brain always does it to me
@julien50532 жыл бұрын

I appreciate Japan for what it is naturally, but I'm tired of these naive people who talk about its inhabitants as if they are absolute angels. I once met an arrogant Japanese girl who asked me to stop watching these videos, but I go where I want. she told me that reading my negative comments saddened her but I was telling the truth about her culture. what if we speak their language badly? she refused to admit that her compatriots have many cultural faults! these people have a problem with ego and hypocrisy.

One thing to keep in mind with dating apps is that it appears to be a totally different ballpark for men than for women (at least I've been told). My current boyfriend of 2 years spent a whole 3 years on Tinder and while he met some friendly ladies, nothing seemed to work out. One of my male friends is in the middle of a similar situation. The way he described it to me is he thinks in general, guys might have more simple standards (whether loose, or solid) and will go into a date with an open mind to see how things will go, where as women tend to be more strict with their standards and also tend to judge appearance a little more before giving someone a chance (though the intense standards could also be a way of guarding their heart, which is understandable). Of course this is a loose generalization, and these tendencies can go both ways regardless of gender or sexuality. But it was a bit shocking to me because I had matched with my current boyfriend the DAY I installed the app for the first time, along with a couple other guys that were nice. Idk. This is kind of what I had picked up on and talked about in regards to dating apps.

Men outnumber women 9 to 1 on Tinder, so there's that. Which again enables women to be extremely picky and only go for the top 2% guys or whatever. 16:10 yeah I noticed that when I attempted to use Tinder in japan,like you straight up have no fucking idea what they look like aside from some really vague things like hair length and body type. Usually they didn't have a single picture without millions of filters on so you can't even recognize them. Like I shit you not I was going on a date with some girl I met on Tinder and while I was waiting for her some other,completely different girl just approached me in the bar and started speaking english so I simply thought it was her...so I went on a date with her instead and then like couple of hours later we were sitting in an izakaya and I mentioned Tinder at some point and she just said ''Ahh Tinder I never used that but I've heard of it'' and I just started laughing,explained what happened and we just laughed it off and went to an arcade. Probably best date I've ever had with a complete stranger and we ended up having bit of a thing going for the rest of my trip. I have no idea what happened with the actual girl on Tinder.

I also think it’s because in mainland China squatting in public to use the restroom is common so since a lot of Chinese tourists visit Japan it’s an issue. I mean, for many girls here, it's superficial too. The way the guy makes them feel, for example. A lot of girls I know tend to be addicted to the high of the honeymoon stage and whenever that runs out, it's on to the next guy. A good woman seeks genuine love. One where the man is willing to sacrifice his life for her, and where she would be willing to sacrifice her life for him. One where, even if he became paraplegic or vice versa, they would happily stay together and not want to be with anyone else. Those types are rare these days, no matter what country you live in. Many of those type are also desperate for love, which is why they tend to get tricked and abused by their partner who doesn't love them back, and the girl can't help but want to keep trying. It's an incredibly sad situation, and there needs to be more good men to help these types find what they're truly seeking before they end up in an abusive relationship.

dating 800 girls would be a career in itself to be able to just remember anything about anyone as people start to remind you of other similar people quite quickly whether it's looks, personality or whatever. We all know that's a lie. I've known girls that make spreadsheets about all the guys they are currently dating and yes they have no job and schedule dates like meetings at a corporate office. They do treat it like a job. If you ever had a job in a call center with a lot of turnover, you would know the boss is a horrible person that doesn't care about you, same as these people that date like it's their job. They want the best performance from you and to enrich themselves and make themselves richer off your hard work. They don't even make good friends to hang around with.

Personally, for romantic relationships I dont like men with facial hair because it will surely scratch/irritate/tickle my face if we kiss.(I have sensitive skin & a clean freak ok). It could even leave me acne if they're not washing their face often/not washing facial hair area properly. Y'know when you're outdoors with all that dirt and germs that goes with it that is hard to wipe/clean even by using wetwipes? Feel me girls? Get it guys? Even when I was a child, I seldom kiss my father because he has mustache & beard as course as toothbrush bristles LOL so let's say I was traumatized by the idea eversince. But that's just me. There are others who doesnt mind facial hair. Be "you". Dont mold yourself 'too much' for others. There will always be others who'll like you as you are. You might even be thinking of yourself as a garbage but you dont know there is one person or people out there who digs you 500%. (I used to try to fit in starting 12 until I was 20. Im glad I shifted to staying "me" starting 21y/o. Im 26 now. "Living for yourself" is considered a luxury for an Asian. Most "live for others", like being controlled by their parents/relatives even if they're already an adult/married/earning, constantly pleasing the society/friends, pretending to be someone else just to be loved, or being a doll for their spouse, etc). P.S. I found Connor because of 'Nobita from Japan' 😂

6:45 The female friends confusion is kind of a cultural thing. Story time: Back in 2014, I went on a homestay trip(basically a 2-week school swap with a Japanese family; short-term exchange student) to a couple of towns in Hokkaido. While I was there, out of the 15 classmates who came to Japan with me, the only 2 people that I knew were girls, so I mostly hung out with them during the downtime. There was a day we were at this big clothing store in Obihiro with some of our Japanese temporary classmates, and about 20 minutes in, the Japanese students' teacher walked up to me and asked "are you sure you don't want to spend more time with the other boys?" in a tone that implied I was kind of in the wrong or something. That indicated to me that Japanese culture isn't very open about platonic male-female friendships. In other words, it might not have been that woman's fault
@bryannothem15054 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Spoke with multiple men and women in Japan and you just don't cross that gender lines when it comes to friends. It is weird to them. You can't expect to have a good time while barely being able to communicate.
@Saito57G3 жыл бұрын
Well with the 1st girl it was like people mentioned - he literally got off the plane a week before, doesn't have much experience living in Japan yet and doesn't know how long he will stay there because he isn't even yet properly settled in. So obviously you don't want to commit to a serious long-term relationship given all these facts - unless you are an asshat that will enter a longterm relationship knowing girl's intentions and after a week you would go "Yeaaah, I'm going back to my country, been nice dating you" As for the girl that knew barely any english, there was no future for them due to problems with communication. To summarize: The 1st girl would have an amazing chance if they met AFTER Connor knew more about his future in Japan, properly settled in etc. and thus could commit to long-term relationship

The interesting question would be if Connor had asked her why she paid the bill. I.e. If it was similar to new gender norms in western cultures -- "I don't want you to pay for me and make me feel obligated to date you". @moyga4 жыл бұрын
6:43 - No that actually is a cultural difference. It's much rarer for men and women to go out together by themselves if they are not dating in Japan. People tend to either hang out in a bigger group, or just with friends of the same gender. Another common misunderstanding is... if you tell people you are dating someone, or going on dates with someone, but they aren't your girlfriend, they generally get confused and don't understand. Btw when you're telling people you're an Otaku, that generally doesn't mean like "Oh I really like anime and manga". If you just tell someone you are an Otaku, that word has a negative connotation. It's not just someone who really likes something, but someone who has an obsessive interest in something, to the point where it's become a little unhealthy, dysfunctional or anti-social. That is the connotation. As you said in your video, there's a selection bias issue. Most Japanese people aren't using tinder. Most aren't trying to find and date foreign people, most can't speak much English, so you will tend to meet a kind of subset of the population.
@virtualarmageddon62324 жыл бұрын
I'm sure he probably knows about the otaku thing being a negative term in Japan seeing as he's friends with Joey who has mentioned it on his channel a couple of times. I’m not Japanese, but as an Asian I can say that not all of us are comfortable with hanging out with opposite gender, and prefer hanging out in big groups either boys only or girls only. There is no reason why, it’s just that hanging out with the same gender is more comfortable?easier? This is because there is a kind of mindset that males and females can never be friends. They can start of as friends, but will they be able to end off as friends? Isn’t there something more to it? Aren’t you lying that you don’t feel any physical attraction to him/her as a male/female? This is the kind of connotation that is attached to male and female hanging out together ... Sad but true. However, Asians are also gradually becoming more accepting and understanding of male and female hanging out together. And this might be due to the gradual influence we have gotten from western people/culture(?). You know like TV shows and drama, and see that “ohhhh it’s possible for male and female to be friends!”. And I am definitely one of those asians that really think male and female cannot be friends until the influence of the western. :)

It's called the Cross-race effect. For countries in Asia, there are rarely any foreigners, for that, I mean black, white, and Hispanic. When I first came to the US, if you showed me a single picture of either Rihanna or Beyonce, I couldn't tell who was who. They looked similar to me at that time. However, when I stayed here for some more years, and meet more different people from different races, I don't have the problem anymore.
@Necolace3 жыл бұрын
Even though I'm Asian-American (Japanese-Chinese), because I was raised on American pop culture from childhood living in USA, I actually also had trouble telling Asian celebrities apart until I got more into Asian (mostly Japanese) pop culture in my late teens, and after that it is easier for me to recognize Asian celebrities (still have trouble with many K-pop celebrities though because of the surgeries).

@dzello3 жыл бұрын
@@nde1083 Yeah, however, the cross-race effect isn't the only phenomenon. Because of genetical history, some ethnies look more akin to eachother than others. For example, white people, due to millenias of warring and politically defined borders as well as living in the north, have more distinct traits (like redheads, blonds, stuff like that mostly from recessive genes). Asians and blacks... Are the other way around. Due to their dominant gene pool, differences between people have been diminished massively. So white people struggle at differentiating asians/blacks more than asians/blacks struggle with whites.

As with any language, the ability to use and understand sarcasm requires fluency equivalent to the level of a native speaker. It's not that Japanese people aren't sarcastic, it's just most don't understand English well enough to pick up on it. For example, I have a friend who is Vietnamese who is incredibly sarcastic and roasts me and our other friends all the time. However, when we first met him, he was incredibly quiet and reserved. He was fluent in English, but not to the point where he could pick up on jokes, sarcasm, or slang. Whenever he didn't understand something, we'd explain it to him. Now he's basically fluent in English and takes immense pleasure in roasting us every chance he gets. Apparently, he's the least sarcastic of his Vietnamese friends, but I don't believe him haha

Then why do a bunch of Americans not understand British banter when their English fluency is perfectly fine?
@vecislt4 жыл бұрын
You see being fluent doesn't mean you know the culture. I'm not fluent in English, but I've been living in UK past 8 years and people here are very, very sarcastic(in a good way). People who are fluent, but never had English people to hang out with probably wont understand it, because English have such a unique sarcasm that they somehow manage to hide it :) for example when I see Americans being sarcastic its straight and simple while Brits are very different :)

Not necessarily, certain cultures just don’t use sarcasm as much. Joey the anime man , a half japanese, half australian who’s fluent in English & Japanese made a video about how Japanese basically doesn’t use sarcasm at all.

My husband (who has a huge beard) and I went to a 7/11 in Japan and the clerk was so amazed that he asked to touch it. My husband was caught off guard and said yes, so the clerk proceeded to stroke my husband’s beard and comment on the softness. I tried not to laugh because the clerk was genuinely fascinated and curious, but I lost my shit. In hindsight, this was such a bizarre and most un-Japanese thing we experienced in Japan.
