The Wasp queen's ranged stinger explodes on impact, think of it like an RPG. The main issue with the blast is that if the stinger isn't on-screen it doesn't show the blast radius, so you can be hit by 'nothing'

You literally can't progress the story without tier 3 tools, which he explicitly says at the beginning, and he did not use them to fight anything. Imagine trying to downplay the insane skill needed to accomplish this.
