I’ve had this grinder for about a year and it’s been a bit of a struggle. The quality of the grind I feel is a little better than my Compak E5 but consistency was all over the place at least initially. I’ve ran a lot of beans through it over time and it’s gotten better but it’s still pretty finicky compared to the Compak. For example barely moving the grind size collar can greatly change the output, makes it hard to dial in different coffees. Also it absolutely is NOT zero retention even with RDT. The grinder retains about 2-2.5 grams of coffee at any given time so I still flush 2 grams through each morning. You will see this if you fully clean out the grinder. Anyway, it produces a quality grind and my shots are better. But they have not solved the annoying retention issues that come with large flat burr grinders.

I’ve had the grinder for about 5 months and almost always get exactly 18 grams in and 18 grams out, even on the first grind of the day. I only really have two grind settings, one for espresso and one for drip coffee and it always seems to the get grind correct without fiddling after a grind change. I’m always using the same coffee roast so not much experience with different coffees.

Glad it’s working for you. I have been using it exclusively for several months now and there is still weird variability every now and then. One day shot times are super quick with no change in grind size and using same coffee and procedure. Next day it’s back to normal. Something ain’t right…. Also keep in mind that just because you get out what you put in doesn’t mean there isn’t any retention, you are getting “exchange”. Fully clean out the grinder and then measure input vs output.
@thedudetreb Жыл бұрын
@@oldgeezersendurochannel8487 I’m only clean my grinder every few months and season with a few grinds after each clean to ensure near zero retention after that. My understanding, right or wrong, is that the seasoning coats the inside of the grinder, including filling all the nooks and crannies with fine coffee grinds that won’t easily dislodge with the bellows. I’m sure that some of this coating will occasionally dislodge and there will be small amount of exchange at times. It hasn’t bothered me yet and I’m getting very consistent shots, compared with my old Quamar Q50 which required a throw away grind every morning.

very thorough video. appreciate all the grinding. the cup holder seems more like an afterthought, but as long as the money went into the grinder motor and burrs, I suppose that's acceptable.

great review.. How is this machine for brewing V60, pour over coffee ?
@7amadexplains4773 ай бұрын
I’ve been using this grinder for 4 years now, and I don’t know if I would recommend it to anyone today. The light on top stopped working after a month or two. It has no consistency at all, in the same grind setting you could pull a 30 second shot and 20 in the next one. And it always eats 1 gram, I would need to insert a brush in the shoot to extract the rest of the grounds. And this is after rdt. I would say pay a couple of extra bucks and go for the Lagom-64 if you were looking for similar burr size.
@noyb-ybАй бұрын
there is usually retention in the nozzle (upper end of it). I use my middle finger when I am finished grinding and get the last ~0.5 grams out into the provided metal cup. Then I weigh it to ensure its all gone and no retention. If there is still a difference, simply turn the grinder ON with the metal cup under the nozzle and a little more will come out. This way I am never am more the ~2/10 gram out i.e. virtually near zero retention. I do not use the spray at all, I am worried about long term rust. The light did indeed stop working but it's of little use at home for single-dose work. The grind quality appears to be very good, I use it exclusively for espresso and more recently the High-Extraction baskets which require a much finer grind than traditional baskets. Also, I hot-load the grinder, so I turn grinder on first and then I pour the beans into, as it runs, and the rest (air-pumping) is similar to the video. The key is to weigh the dose before grind and again after the grind and use the middle-finger trick and sometimes turn it on, to get all grinds out.

I cannot believe that we're almost in 2022 and grinder manufacturers are having us spray water and mix beans with our fingers. And the bellow.. I cannot fathom how they thought this is reasonably acceptable. Utterly insane. The Baratza 270 may be plasticy and loud - but not only is is a real single-dose and zero-retention grinder, I also don't feel like a fool for needing to spritz water and mix beans and use a bellow.

Is it clumpy due to the water spray?
@CorrupteddSanity3 жыл бұрын
@@vellaru no. Because of poor clump management.
@owenhu94653 жыл бұрын
Baratza 270 has conical burrs whereas this has flat burrs, conical burrs have way less retention by nature of the design. Conical and flat burrs each have their pro's and con's, and this is one of flat burrs' cons. It is not the manufacturer's fault and you should do some research before lashing out. I do agree that this grinder does not have the best value, but the bellow is a completely reasonable and acceptable design decision. Also, just so you know, in places with very dry climate, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have zero retention without using spray water, this is why even multi-thousand dollar grinders will include a spray bottle or recommend using it. If you "feel like a fool" for using a bellow or spray bottle, you are trying too hard to be cool.

I was really close to buying this grinder to replace my Baratza sette 270, which I use as a single doser... I have to say, seeing it in action, I'm a little disappointed. it's really slow to grind 18g and it appears to take quite some effort to blow out all the grinds compared to my Baratza. Maybe it's just the difference between the conical burrs over the flat burrs? Now I'm confused. The main reason I wanted to change my Sette is because it is so loud and also, the grind setting tends to move a little during grinding. Maybe I should go with the Niche?
@CorrupteddSanity3 жыл бұрын
I use th he 270 and want to upgrade you something less loud and bigger burrs. Honestly, the noise isn't a issue. An I want to try bigger burrs just because of the hype/reputation. But there's nothing like the 270.
@stuipooey13 жыл бұрын
Niche is good, workflow and overall useabilty is much better than the 270 however for me there is not a huge difference on shot quality. I ended up with the Niche when my 270 broke which i eventually had repaired and have kept it around. You could also consider the new Euerka Mignon Oro single doser which as well as 64mm flat burrs as almost zero retention. Depending on where you are it may be easier to get a hold off in comparision with the Niche
@CorrupteddSanity3 жыл бұрын
@@stuipooey1 I'm not sure how the niche workflow and use is better than the 270. With the niche, you have the added workflow step of grinding into cup, spraying with water and mixing as most nice owners tend to do, then transferring to a portafilter. With the 270, you grind directly into the portafilter.

So, what did you decide and how's it going? Whole Latte Love also has a review of this machine. The performance seems much less clumpy on that review. If you are after single dose with flat burrs then around this same price point (although a bit more) is the Lagom P-64. See James Hoffman's grinder showdown video(s) for some more details. Then, there's always the Niche, as you said. I bet it wouldn't suck to own one. Really interested in what you decided because I'm in the same boat ... trying to decide.

@majestycoffee3 жыл бұрын
Grindz should be perfectly fine in this grinder and will help dislodge any grounds. The E5SD chamber doesn’t allow for much space for grinds to get stuck and the burrs treated to repel water and rust so in theory there shouldn’t be too much getting stuck in there. Thanks for the question!

Yes, he was grinding while adjust grind size. I own a unit of this grinder and I would say there are about 1-2 grams still retained when moving from espresso to pour over grind setting that gets out when you use the bellows after having adjusted the grind size coarser. I believe this has to do with more space being there when you grind coarser so you‘re able to push more retained ground coffee out.
