Is Cebuano a royal language? Well, it was the native tongue of Lapu-Lapu, the warrior king of Mactan who defeated Ferdinand Magellan. He is recognized as the first Filipino hero to resist European occupation, and his victory delayed the Spanish colonization of the Philippines for decades! Today, Cebuano is the main language of Cebu City---the Queen City of the South---and myriad other surrounding islands. Cebuano is also the mother tongue of numerous Filipina beauty queens. So many royal connections!
In this video, Firth and three Cebuana beauty queens tour the Queen City of the South and its rapidly evolving language.
*
Cebuano is a native language of the Philippines. It is the second largest language in the country by total number of speakers, and may be the largest mother tongue.
It is a Visayan language, related to other Visayan languages like Hiligaynon, Waray, Akeanon, Minasbate, Kinaray-a, and others.
Cebuano is named after the island of Cebu, where the language likely originated before it spread to other parts of the Visayan islands and Mindanao. It is the lingua franca in Cebu, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Siquijor, Camiguin, western Leyte, southern Masbate, and large parts of Mindanao.
Cebuano has many varieties (dialects). In this video, we feature the Cebuano spoken in Cebu City. Find out the quirks of the Mother Tongue (Queen’s Tongue?) of the Queen City of the South!
*

Actually, Cebuano is a national language in the Philippines. It's a common mistake of us Filipinos to believe that the national language is Filipino that is based in Tagalog. It is wrong, according to the 1987 constitution, Filipino as a national language is a basis of existing Philippine and other languages. It never mentioned in the constitution that it's based in Tagalog alone. It is all Philippine languages. It's in Article XIV section 6.

I'm a Filipino native.... And I'm also a native Tagalog speaker lol. Hahaha... I just found that Bisaya is a LANGUAGE! Many of us thought that's a Dialect which is not because we Tagalog speakers can't really understand them.
@firthm2
@firthm2 3 жыл бұрын
You are right, Cebuano (Sinugbuanong Binisaya) is a language! In the past, people were taught that Tagalog is a language, and Cebuano is a dialect, but that is not correct. Both are languages because they are mutually unintelligible. They are different languages because they cannot be easily understood by each other. In linguistics, this is the standard criterion for distinguishing a language from a dialect. Dialects can be understood by their speakers because the differences are quite small (like American English and British English), but languages cannot be understood by their respective speakers (for example, German and French). Cebuano, Tagalog and Ilokano are different languages because they are very different from each other and do not understand each other.

Just like other languages, Cebuano has lots of dialects. The Cebuano spoken in Metro Cebu area, more specifically in Cebu City and all the way to south in Carcar and up north til Danao City. The Cebuano dialect spoken in this metropolitan region is slightly different than the Cebuano spoken beyond Carcar in the south and beyond Danao City in the north. Then the Cebuano dialect spoken in Bantayan Island is also slightly different from those spoken in both Metro Cebu and the rest of the towns and cities in the mainland. The Cebuano dialect spoken in Negros Oriental, Bohol, Southern Leyte, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, CARAGA Region and Southern Mindanao also are slightly different from the one spoken in Cebu. But all are intelligible to each other. When Cebuano-speaking people from Mindanao, Negros Island, Leyte Island and Bohol talk to each other, they understand to each other without major problem. The English language is also like that. English spoken in Britain and the UK, in general, also has dozens of different dialects. English spoken in Greater London area is slightly different than English spoken outside London or in many peripheries around it. In fact there are 37 dialects spoken in London Metropolitan Area alone.

Very true like British English has different dialects and accents just like Cockney- the most famous and widely spoken in UK, base in london. Estuary- another london base accent but not as common as the cockney Yorkshire- Spoken by people from a big county yorkshire England Northern Irish- one of the beautiful accent but a strong one. Scottish- spoken by many people from scotland and can be sounded like nordic language in the far north. Brummie- spoken by the people from Birmingham. Scouse- or sometimes called a liverpudlian accent, spoken by the people from liverpool. Geordie- spoken by the people from New Castle, the different one because the ‘r’ at the end of the word aren’t pronounced instead they pronounced as ‘ah’ like sugar sounds sugah center - centah.

Hi Januar! It depends. In the native tongue, you are correct, the formal and specific name of the language is Sinugbuanong-Binisaya. But in English, the name of the language is 'Cebuano'. That´s why in the English Wikipedia, the article on the language is listed under the term 'Cebuano'. In summary, languages have different names in different languages. For example, in Spanish, the name of the spanish language is ''Español', but in English it is called 'Spanish'.

Cebuano is both language and people. Cebuano is a language spoken not just in Cebu but also to a large part of the Visayas and Mindanao region with slight differences in vocabulary and intonation. On the otherhand, Cebuano is also what you refer to someone who lives in Cebu. This is also the case with Spanish. Spanish is a language that is spoken not just in Spain but to 21 other countries and Spanish is what you call someone who lives in Spain.
@kierrodavid1755

This is the reason why people outside Cebu doesn’t want their language to be called Cebuano because they are mistaken to be from Cebu the reason why they call it Bisaya but frankly this is misleading because Bisaya refers to a group of languages and people groups that comprises the Visayas region or Bisayas. Technically, you can call an Ilonggo as bisaya or a Waray-Waray as bisaya but unfortunately, even them wants to disassociate with bisaya because of the stereotype created by the Tagalogs that bisaya are maids or helpers.

True, most people use the term ´´dialect´´, but actually they mean ´´language´´. Cebuano is a LANGUAGE, not a dialect. Dialect = accent Language = complete system of communication within a group of people. Dialects are just versions of the same language. Whereas languages are distinct, independent, and mutually unintelligible with other languages. Therefore, Cebuano is a LANGUAGE, not a dialect. Nevertheless, the CEBUANO LANGUAGE has several dialects, like the Cebuano varieties north of Cebu city and the Cebuano varieties south of Cebu city.

The language is Binisaya while the people is Bisaya. Actually Binisaya is a family of languages. If you go to Samar, the Waray will say They speak Binisaya. If You go to Bacolod the Ilonggos will say they speak Binisaya. All these Languages are Binisaya - Waray, Hiligaynon (aka Ilonggo), Akeanon, Kinaray-a, Cebuano-Boholano, Surigaonon, Butuanon, Asi, Unhan abd Romblonon in Romblon, Cuyonon in Palawan, Madbateño and Tocaonon in Masbate, Tausug (But Tausugs dispute this). Speakers in Mindanao do not identify with Cebu and call what they speak Bisaya or Binisaya although It is Cebuano. Having said that, as kids in Cebu we called what We spoke Binisaya. Cebuano is a term I learned when I came to Manila.

In some regard, however, Visayans (and other ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippines) ARE oppressed, by the centralized government in Manila and the Tagalog elite! We might agree on that one actually.

Love All Languages Its wrong when its every where and it is senseless. It becomes a troll habit, that eventually gives intelligent societies the impression that one is very insecure. The sad reality is, the worst people you will encounter in the Visayas are the Self Hating Hypocrites. I don’t have to elaborate. But these self hating few can be such a nightmare to naive and wide eyed foreigners. These are the same creatures that act like they are so proud. But anyone smart and well traveled can sense their gaping insecurity that can make them think everyone looks down at them.
@eduardochavacano
@eduardochavacano 4 жыл бұрын
Love All Languages Pride is an illusion. The representation of the Bisaya culture was disguised as a Pride thing. But in reality, it was just to Mock or create some sort of Parody. I feel bad for the people of the Visayas, when a TV series about a Maid from Cebu goes to Manila, and its a comedy, the humor is mainly based on the language or accent of the Bisaya character. So the Pride excuse made it acceptable. When it should be revolting.
