Okuma makes some nice surf rods and doesnt receive enough credit. I have the older 3-8oz 11 foot cedros, great, great rod. I cant say enough about it, it has been my go to bait rod for the last 10 years, but I havent fished with the newer models though. I also have both 12 foot rockaways, the 3/4-3 and 1-4 oz which I use for throwing bucktails, tins and poppers from the ocean for blues, stripers and fluke. I also bait fish with them from the back bays around my area when I want extra distance for porgys. They have unreal bite detection and sensitivity and surprisingly good backbone for how light and thin they are.

So correct Jonathan! I still have my 11ft Cedros Rod! Fought a 5ft GT on it for over 40min. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIbFqWBqgM2cjtU These new HD Rocks are the power pinnacle! I'm still blown away. 6-16oz?!

@@ScubaChris nice, one of my bucket list fish. Also, have you fished the rockaway spinning reel? Ive been looking at them since they came out. If you have, what are your thoughts about the reel and are they a long cast reel as they look?

@@jonathanorourke1237 I use that reel on my 9'6" HCS Shoreline Plugger. Good MH plugging/casting rig!

I actually have 2 rockaway poles. One for dunking and one for whipping. I love both of them. Can't go wrong for the price point.

What is the best reel size for this beast? I am definitely buying one!!!!

Either a 10K or 14K spinner. I use both. 10K if i'm on the reef, 14K for deeper water. Both have the same max (Cedros Spinners) but the 14K has more line capacity.

BTW Is this named after The Rockaway's Queens New York? My old stomping grounds?

Named after a popular Oregon coastal spot for Sea Perching.

That 14ft HCS whipping rod is tops for distance whipping. This will be the STRONGEST surf casting dunking rod for Okuma now! Not many companies out there can touch this for only $139.99!

The Okuma site only has the smaller model available. The HD line is back-ordered. My next 2 models are scheduled to arrive in the 1st week of July from Okuma USA. I'm just lucky to have what i have now. Usually Tackle Direct has them but not now at- www.tackledirect.com/okuma-rockaway-hd-surf-rods.html

Depends where you live. They're sold locally in Hawaii. You can get one off the Okuma site but they're down due to California Shut Down. Okuma does a lot of business with Tackle Direct. Here's their link to this rod. Good luck:) www.tackledirect.com/okuma-rockaway-hd-surf-rods.html

When you fish on the Big island (or any cliff type of terrain), the water gets very deep, very fast in most GOOD fishing spots on the big island. Im talking 50' deep right in front of you going to 100+ft @ 50 yards out. The further you throw the better. Can't throw full potential on light weight lead. I personally throw 12 oz (since that's the max my custom ulua 14ft pole can handle. Lol)
@ScubaChris4 жыл бұрын
@@808G8GT I used to throw 12oz into channels but have reduced that to 8oz as there's no current issues where i go. But in reef areas (4-6ft) where theres rip currents i do use 10oz so my rig isn't "rolled" across the bottom because of those rip currents. Either you rig comes back in a ball or it'll roll into the reef to lose forever if you go light.
