This is an excellent presentation of Charvaka philosophy given the fact that we only have historical records of the "opponent's views" of the Charvakas. I do want to concur and emphasize three points. Although the Charvakas "freed" themselves from orthodoxy, they did base their discussion on observation. In fact, I would say that this was the closest thing to the scientific method now used in the modern times where hypothesis graduates to theory and theory to law only on the basis of repeated observation. Even the laws (Newton's Law) are subject to modification (General Relativity) to accommodate observed anomalies (orbit of Mercury). Secondly, it should be mentioned that Ajita Kesakambali (a materialist) lived a very simple (non luxurious) life. Thirdly, positing "God" or "Gods" into the argument for the "ultimate cause" only begs the question which is a point the Charvakas could not have missed (speculation on my part entirely). The fact that this point is not mentioned anywhere supports my statement that unfortunately nothing from the great works of Charvakas has survived from the Charvakas themselves but only from the "mouths" of their opponents. Once again, an excellent presentation. Thank you for the fine presentation.
