Because of the position of its fibers, leather material has more elasticity in one direction (to the left and right sides) than the other direction upwards and downwards (from the head to the tail). I mean if we follow the vertical direction leather material would be stiffer.
I want to add that 'stretching' is not done evenly. If we scrutinize all over the surface of our leather hide we would realize thar back and butt areas are stiffer than belly areas).
Leather does not behave as vinyl that it really stretches evenly breathwise because of its one direction stretchy fabric backing.
Taking advantage of this knowledge, we can mold leather onto or into some pieces which need to be customized with this beautiful material.
In the case I show in the video, I have decided to do it one piece; but to ease the job, we could cut and sew in some parts...it depends on the upholsterer's/owner's decision.

@@mxcollin95Yeah, he does! Not a sign of arthritis, either! I worked at an upholstery shop for a few years, and I can tell you: it’s extremely hard on your hands! You go home with sore muscles and tendons in your hands and arms every night! Alcantara is a little easier to work with ( not to mention a bit cheaper!). And stretches easier

Agreed . . . He taught me more in an hour than 15 yrs.working in a canvas and trim shop. But imagine this, not only did he speed up the footage, for every one of the individual sections you need to add an extra 15 minutes (10 at the least) for the contact cement to tack up. This is why at alot of trim shops if you want a dash done they will try to sell you a dash cap or cover, most people would not want to pay what it costs for a job like this

@@maufcr Well it will tack up and stick.... if you go too fast it won't stick. If you go too slow it will harden. If you watch him he often peels it back up after it sticks to stretch it more. That is fine while it's tacky.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they work and keep their area clean. He is patient and he cleans along the way and his work area clean. These are things I look for if I need to get work done. If the shop looks like crap then their work is mostly crap and the way they run their business. I would hire this guy in a minute to do all my leather work.

Adi Satzinger,Thanks for following us on you tube! ...the method I'm using is the 'artisan way'...if we were to wrap a similar piece using a 'factory way', therefore it would be advisable to prepare two 'dies' (male and female)...the leather would be first softened, then, between the two dies would be molded and shaped, at one go...after having the 'molded leather piece' ready, it would be gently glued to the plastic piece. The leather I am using is a 'standard automotive leather'...we have to take advantage of the stretchy side of leather material to give shape to the plastic piece. Nonetheless, there are 'special leathers'which suffered a 'special treatment' to get a 'super extra' stretching/elasticity' in different directions(this leather would be useful if we were to use the 'dies method'. Chris Fredriksson Thanks for kind remarks! ...this video shows just one technique to leather wrap a 'non-flat plastic piece'...this piece is part of the dashboard of a 'sentra lucino 1999'(my son's car).This technique uses a 'stretching method' which should be done part by part...But, by stretching the leather material, it starts loosing its imprinted grain. To avoid erasing its grain we would use the other method that is 'tailor/shoemaker approach', by doing several cuts and sewings(blind stitches/double stitches/oversewing

Cechaflo No worries dude! I've done some minor work with leather like this, and your work is incredibly clean. May I ask what glue you're using? I tried contact cement, but it kinda "bleeds" through if you glob it on like you did (or was it simply the brand I used?).

Thanks for appreciating the job itself. In fact the main point is the technique to do the job. As an experiment, we used a cheap 'shoe's leather' to cover the interior. A shoe's leather does not have the 'sealer/lacquer' most of automotive leathers have. We aplied over a 'water soluble shiny lacquer' by hand. it's better a 'solvent based lacquer' and it can be applicable by using a 'painting gun'. It has passed almost 7 years and the leather is still in good condition. Now it has a different 'black and navy blue combination' and it looks much better...it's been repainted.

Estimado Rogerio, El pegamento amarillo que uso es diluido a base de solvente (thinner). se compra en botellas de vidrio o recipientes de metal. Se usa mucho en la industria de la zapatería. Para su uso se aplica con una brocha. Hay pegamentos similares pero más líquidos que tienen el mismo efecto y se aplican con pistola de pintar. Este pegamento amarillo es le mismo que se aplica para pegar formica en la superficie de algunas mesas o muebles. Danny Chan ...Interesting question! ...upholsterers must respect airbags and must be removed by a trained technician. These parts could be covered respecting the 'tearing lines' if some collision. Check on these related pictures: The steering wheel has an airbag and I covered it respecting and following the 'tearing lines' and the stitches are only simulated on top view(there is no closing seam). I have said 'weldwood glue' because it is easy to find at Home Depot stores in many countries...it is also a yellow glue used to stick formica...it is very strong.

+Kelly Medley upholstery guy, Tuff shit "customer". here is your bill. It doesn't work like that. If you have buyers remorse after choosing the fabric and agreeing to the labor that's pretty much on you. They will keep your stuff and if it's a big job like full interior they will put a lien on your car and if it's already paid off that lien can be used to acquire a title and seize your vehicle.

I landed on this by accident and I am glad that I did. What amazing work. I had some wooden pieces I have been pondering wrapping in leather for a while, but they are much simpler shapes, and I had been planning on just cutting the sides out and gluing them on, not actually wrapping. I am amazes at how well you got the leather to contour to the plastic. What a great finish for 3D printed parts. The big questions I am walking away with are is that just normal thin leather, like if I skin a leather couch for the leather, is that the same stuff or is this something special? And the other big question is what is the adhesive you are using?

Regarding the leather question the stuff is the same everywhere. ​@Ian Walter One of the 'secrets' to avoid the unsticking is to force the leather on top areas and let it lay flat, loose on lower sections with no tension at all.

@@Cechaflo Thank you for the link! Some of them demos it was pretty easy to see that one side was the stretch side, on the one with the leather with the holes in it, they looked about even to me. I thought I had it pegged by which way dimpled down more when you pulled on it. I am going to have to watch that video a couple of times. One of these days I am going to try this. I have a lot of leather from a couple roadside couches that I skinned.
